The Republic of Ireland striker was a thorn in Newcastle's defence throughout as Eddie Howe's side slumped to a third consecutive defeat.

How the match unfolded

Ferguson opened the scoring on 27 minutes, tapping in from close range after Nick Pope had spilled Billy Gilmour's long-range strike.

The Brighton striker's second goal in the 65th minute sparked joyous scenes at Amex Stadium.

The 18-year-old received a pass from Gilmour 30 yards out from goal before unleashing a wonderful curling strike into the bottom-right corner.

Five minutes later, Ferguson claimed the match ball after his left-footed strike took a huge deflection that wrongfooted Pope.

Ferguson is now only the fourth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick aged 18 or younger, after Chris Bart-Williams, Robbie Fowler, and Michael Owen.

The Irishman's treble was the third registered in the Premier League on Saturday, after Erling Haaland and Son Heung-min.

That meant for only the second time in the competition's history, and for the first time since 23 September 1995, three different players claimed a hat-trick on the same day, after Fowler, Alan Shearer, and Tony Yeboah.

Substitute Callum Wilson scored a consolation goal for Newcastle in second-half stoppage time, his second of the season.

Brighton, meanwhile, have won three of their first four matches, scoring 12 goals, more than any other side.
