Manchester City have won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time, triumphing 5-4 on penalties against Sevilla after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, Greece.

Sevilla, playing in their seventh final, took the lead on 25 minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri rose above the Man City defence to head in.

But City pulled level just after the hour-mark when 21-year-old Cole Palmer, who scored against Arsenal in the FA Community Shield, guided his header back across the goal from an excellent Rodri cross.

Palmer is only the second player to score in both the Community Shield and Super Cup in the same year, after Michael Owen in 2001.

With the scores still level after 90 minutes, the match went to penalties and both sides successfully converted their first four spot-kicks.

After captain Kyle Walker netted his effort, Nemanja Gudelj smashed his penalty against the crossbar to hand City the win.

'Fantastic feeling'

"If anyone has played with me, they know I don't like taking penalties," Walker told the club's official website. "I don’t like letting people down if I miss.  The gaffer put me as No 5, I had to, as captain and for leadership. Thankfully it went in and it was the winning one.

"To come here with this cup which we worked so hard for and win, to put it in the trophy cabinet for Manchester City, it’s a fantastic feeling."

Man City are the third Premier League club to lift the trophy, after Chelsea and Liverpool.
