Tottenham Hotspur have announced the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach.

The 57-year-old becomes the first Australian to take charge of a Premier League club and signs a four-year deal with Spurs that starts on 1 July.

“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,” Spurs chair, Daniel Levy, told the club's official website. “He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy - everything that is important to our Club.

“We are excited to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead."

Postecoglou joins the north London club after two very successful seasons with Celtic. In his debut campaign with the Scottish side, he won the league title before retaining it this season as well as winning both domestic cups.

Before then he coached Yokohama F Marinos to the J-League title in 2019 and took the Australian national men's team to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Postecoglou moves to Spurs after they had a disappointing 2022/23. Following Antonio Conte’s departure in March, interim head coaches Cristian Stellini, who left a month after Conte, and Ryan Mason could only help the club finish eighth in the Premier League, as they failed to qualify for any European competition.

Opening fixture out next week

Postecoglou will find out his opening Premier League match when the 2023/24 fixtures are released at 09:00 BST on Thursday 15 June. The season will start on 12 August.

Before then Postecoglou will take Spurs back to his native Australia for pre-season training and a friendly against West Ham United on 18 July as part of a tour of Asia.
