The Netherlands goalkeeper shocked the world by joining Premier League debutants Fulham from Italian giants Juventus in 2001, but if there were any doubts about his ability at the age of 30, he was quick to dispel them with four outstanding seasons at Craven Cottage.
Van der Sar then signed for Manchester United in 2005 and would go on to enjoy one of the most successful spells of any goalkeeper in the competition's history.
He won the title four times in his six seasons at Old Trafford, including three successive triumphs in 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09.
In the third of those title-winning campaigns, he kept a clean sheet in 14 successive Premier League matches between November 2008 and February 2009, which remains a competition record, and won the Golden Glove with 21 shutouts.
He then finished his top-flight career with his fourth Premier League title aged 40, in 2010/11.

"Edwin [had] what's needed to be a great 'keeper - shot-stopping, presence, authority, organiser, good feet, mental strength, agility, there are more. But one thing Edwin had more than any 'keeper I ever played with was calmness and composure." - Rio Ferdinand
"A magnificent person, professional goalkeeper, an absolutely marvellous career he's had. He's an example to anyone who wants to become a goalkeeper. Edwin sails through life without any changes in it. He has a consistent nature. He's unflappable." - Sir Alex Ferguson
Only one goalkeeper has won more Premier League titles than Van de Sar's four, Peter Schmeichel lifting the trophy five times.
Van der Sar went 1,310 minutes without conceding a goal (21 hours and 50 minutes) during his 14-match run of clean sheets.
From the start of 2005/06 (when he joined Man Utd) until now, Van der Sar has the best save percentage of any goalkeeper to have played 100+ Premier League matches (76 per cent).
