Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool have united to support a groundbreaking testing scheme to help the city's battle against coronavirus and let local families gather for Christmas.

The rapid mass-testing programme allows people throughout Liverpool to get tested at a number of centres, including at the Reds' Anfield stadium.

Stopping the spread

The tests will help identify more positive cases from individuals who are not displaying symptoms so they can self-isolate and prevent the virus from spreading.

The managers of the city's two clubs are urging locals to take part.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti said: "Hopefully now rapid mass testing is available to everyone in Liverpool, it will mean we can control the virus better, help the city get out of tier 3 restrictions once the lockdown ends and eventually allow us to celebrate Christmas with our loved ones.”

Make a difference

With the rapid nature of the test, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has stressed the importance of people getting themselves checked out.

"Regular testing has kept the Premier League going and allowed us to be out on the pitch every week," Klopp said.

"It takes 10 seconds to take a test and 10 days to make a difference."
