Last season's FA Cup winners Arsenal beat reigning Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield on a day when 13 clubs stepped up their preparations for the new season.

With exactly two weeks to go until 2020/21 kicks off, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck the winning spot-kick after Rhian Brewster had missed for Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

Aubamayang also scored a stunner in normal time at Wembley Stadium before Takumi Minamino's first Liverpool goal sent the match to penalty kicks.

Werner quick off the mark

Timo Werner took just four minutes to score his first Chelsea goal as some 2,500 fans watched a 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion in a test event for the return of supporters.

Werner struck after Callum Hudson-Odoi knocked down a cross from Hakim Ziyech, who took his new club's set-pieces before going off injured.

Neal Maupay missed a penalty for Brighton but Pascal Gross scored a spot-kick of his own, won by Aaron Connolly, in a match in which Ben White made his first start since returning from loan at Leeds United.

Two goals and assist for Ings

Danny Ings was involved in three goals as Southampton beat Swansea City 7-1 at St Mary's Stadium.

James Ward-Prowse scored twice, with Che Adams, Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand also on target.

Ayew and Zaha inspire Palace win

Crystal Palace gave a debut to summer signing Eberechi Eze in their 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic.

Jordan Ayew netted a brace and Wilfried Zaha got a goal and an assist.

West Ham win marred by Antonio knock

Andriy Yarmolenko and Tomas Soucek secured a 2-1 win over Brentford but West Ham United fans and Fantasy Premier League managers were left to worry about Michail Antonio.

Antonio assisted the winning goal while playing as a striker but went off injured.

Victories for Spurs and Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur got their third consecutive pre-season win thanks to a late stunner from substitute Steven Bergwijn, with Harry Kane an unused substitute.

Meanwhile, Andy Carroll scored his second goal in as many matches as Newcastle United defeated Barnsley.

Carroll converted Matt Ritchie's cutback before Jacob Murphy's penalty in a 2-1 win.

Vardy makes return, Pope beaten twice

Last season's Golden Boot winner, Jamie Vardy, made his first pre-season appearance but was unable to find the net in Leicester City's goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

One of 2019/20's best goalkeepers, Nick Pope, would also have been disappointed to concede two goals in Burnley's defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

A different Clarets XI did win 3-0 against Tranmere Rovers, however, with Matej Vydra, Bobby Thomas and Johann Gudmundsson scoring and Erik Pieters getting two assists.

Promoted teams in action

Fulham warmed up for their season opener against Arsenal with a 2-2 draw against MK Dons. Aboubakar Kamara and Tom Cairney scored their goals.

West Bromwich Albion, meanwhile, suffered a narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest with Charlie Austin, Matheus Pereira and Jamie Soule going closest.
