Everton were held by 10-man Leicester City as their Premier League 2 Division 1 title defence began with a goalless draw.

Foxes goalkeeper Viktor Johansson denied Antony Evans and Dennis Adeniran in the first half at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

After the interval, Everton defender Lewis Gibson counter-attacked with a powerful run but fired wide.

The hosts were given a numerical advantage in the 55th minute as Leicester's Darnell Johnson was shown a straight red card for halting the progress of Fraser Hornby.

But the reigning PL2 Division 1 champions were unable to capitalise, Anthony Gordon missing the target with a header and then sending a curling shot just past the post.
