Former title-winner sees more twists and turns in race to be Premier League champions

Alan Shearer feels the pressure is on Liverpool as their quest for a first Premier League title stuttered, but sees more twists and turns in the race with Manchester City for the trophy.

A goalless draw with Everton means that Liverpool have claimed only 16 points from a possible 27 and have seen a 10-point gap over the champions on 29 December overhauled to where City are now one point ahead.

Shearer says Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasing success with Borussia Dortmund will be important, albeit he will have to deal with greater weight on his shoulders at Anfield.

Top two's next matches

"It’s a big swing and it’s going to be tough for Liverpool,” says Shearer. “Klopp’s been in this situation before, but not with Liverpool, so this is where his experience will count.

"We’ve always said this is when it is crunch time, when you get to March and April.

"This is when it really matters and mistakes can be fatal because there can be no way back.

"City are in the driving seat but in 2-3 weeks that might have reversed again.

"It’s certainly not going to be plain sailing. One week it will be a mistake from City, the next we will be saying it is a negative weekend for Liverpool.

"For the neutral it’s great to see."
