Manager Bio

Ralph Hasenhuttl was appointed Southampton’s manager on 5 December 2018, replacing Mark Hughes.

As a player, the Austrian won four league titles in his homeland before having spells in Belgium and Germany, while representing his country eight times and scoring three goals.

Hasenhuttl hung up his boots in 2004 and became a youth team coach at Spielvereinigung Unterhaching in Germany.

He became the head coach of the first team in October 2007 and secured a sixth-place finish in the third tier, while a fourth-place finish followed in 2008/09.

Hasenhuttl departed in February 2010 but returned to the same division 11 months later, taking charge of VfR Aalen. First saving them from relegation, he led the team to promotion in 2011/12, and then ninth place in the second division the season after.

The former striker left in the summer of 2013 and enjoyed almost identical success at his next club. Taking charge of second-tier German side Ingolstadt 04 early in 2013/14, he took them from the bottom of the table to safety, then achieved promotion as champions in his second campaign, and finally secured an 11th-place finish in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, before again moving to pastures new.

He joined RB Leipzig, who had just been promoted to the Bundesliga, and led them to a second-place finish in his first season.

Leipzig reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 2017/18 and finished sixth in the Bundesliga, but Hasenhuttl departed in May.

He joined Southampton seven months later, becoming the Premier League’s first Austrian manager.
