Oxford's James shocks Swansea on PL Cup debut

Former champions beaten after Rev James secures United's 1-0 win in their first Group E fixture

Oxford United marked their first Premier League Cup group fixture with a 1-0 win against former holders Swansea City.

Rev James (pictured) was the match-winner, scoring from close range after Gregor Zabret could not keep hold of Owen James's cross.

Despite pressure from Premier League 2 side Swansea, Oxford held on for victory at Thame's ASM Stadium.

Oxford lead Hull City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swansea in Group E.

Newcastle see off Notts County

Newcastle United kicked off their Group H campaign with a 2-1 win over debutants Notts County.

Elias Sorensen netted the opener before Callum Roberts' superb solo effort put Newcastle 2-0 up. Josh Bingham pulled a goal back for Notts County.

Group H's other sides, Southampton and Leeds United, meet on Friday.

Qualifiers Plymouth hold Derby

Plymouth Argyle earned a goalless draw against PL2 Division 1 side Derby County in Group F after going through the qualifying rounds.

Holders Aston Villa and Bristol City are the other teams in the group and they also meet on Friday.
