Yakubu: Why I Instantly Fell In Love With Everton
Former Everton striker Yakubu says he “fell in love from day one” while with the Toffees – and has thanked the Club’s fans for their ever-present support. The ex-Nigeria international was a spectator for the Blues’ previous outing – a stunning 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Ahead of an atmospheric coach welcome for David Moyes’ players, Yakubu was spotted by fans as he entered the ground. They made sure to show their love to the cherished forward, beginning a rendition of his chant: “Feed the Yak and he will score!” “The welcome from the fans meant so much to me,” he told evertonfc.com. “I was with my daughter, and for her to see the fans and see they still love me, is something I will never forget. “It’s so lovely to see the people remember the good things I did for the Club.” Those good things include 33 Everton goals across 107 appearances during his time on Merseyside between 2007 and 2011. Signed by Moyes from Middlesbrough, it was a memorable summer transfer window for the Blues, who also acquired future Everton icons Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka on permanent deals, as well as bringing in Steven Pienaar on a loan contract. Yakubu struck 15 league goals throughout 29 games in his maiden Toffees campaign, kickstarting a love affair with the Club which he says remains to this day. “Signing for Everton was a great moment,” he added. “I fell in love from day one. “It’s a special club. We call it the ‘People’s Club’. The fans are so friendly. The way they welcomed me was so special. “Even now, I still support them. I just love the place. Goodison Park back then – we made memories. “The Club is always special to me. I think I played my best football here. “Coming all the way from Boro, scoring goals and playing in Europe – it was a great atmosphere and they’re great memories.”
