McGinn named March Player of the Month

John McGinn has been named Aston Villa Player of the Month for March 2026. The captain returned to action with aplomb this month, featuring in the final four games of March, starting each of the last three. Two goals in this time took his tally up to seven for the season, while crucially ensuring Villa will enter April fourth in the Premier League table and in the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Europa League. Having missed his side’s first game of the month – a 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea – as he continued to recover from injury, McGinn made his return in Northern France eight days later, coming off the bench for the final 13 minutes as the Villans took a 1-0 advantage into the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash with LOSC Lille. A first start in just under two months followed three days later, as completed just over an hour in a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, before a first Villa Park start in just over two months came in the second leg against Lille the following week. McGinn was instrumental against the Ligue 1 outfit, netting the opening goal for Unai Emery’s men nine minutes until the second half when neatly finishing off a fine counter-attacking move involving Emi Martínez and Jadon Sancho. Villa triumphed 2-0 on the night to tie up a 3-0 aggregate success and book their place in the last eight. And McGinn’s scoring form continued into the closing game of the month, too. Just 15 minutes into a Premier League visit of West Ham United three days later, McGinn stroked home a short set-piece routine from the edge of the area as Emery’s charges recorded a comfortable 2-0 triumph. McGinn claimed the award having been selected by the Villa supporters, taking close to half of the overall vote, and over 30% more than his closest competitor. Villa's top three players in our March poll were: John McGinn 46% Jadon Sancho 15% Amadou Onana 8% Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations, Ginny!
