EA SPORTS Player of the Month shortlist
Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)
P4 W2 D1 L1 G2 A4
Fernandes registered at least one goal involvement in all four of his Premier League appearances in March, scoring two goals while supplying a further four assists. Those four assists increased his haul for the season to 16, now the most by a Manchester United player in a single campaign, surpassing David Beckham’s 15 assists in 1999/2000. The Portuguese is now four assists shy of matching the Premier League’s all-time single-season record, set by Thierry Henry in 2002/03 and Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/20 (20).
James Garner (Everton)
P3 W2 D0 L1 G0 A2
Garner showcased his all-around ability for Everton in March, delivering assists from midfield in wins against Burnley and Chelsea, while impressing at right-back as the Toffees ran Arsenal close in a tight defeat at Emirates Stadium. "I might be biased but, for me, he was the best player on the pitch," Everton manager David Moyes said of Garner after their 3-0 win against Chelsea, which came a day after he received his first senior England call-up.
Morgan Gibbs-White (Nott'm Forest)
P4 W1 D2 L1 G3 A0
Gibbs-White has found form at just the right time for Nottingham Forest, displaying his goalscoring touch with goals away to Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in March to help pull his team three points clear of the relegation zone. He started the month in style with a dazzling long-range strike against Brighton, but the pick of the bunch was a sensationally improvised backheel against Man City on the way to a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)
P3 W2 D0 L1 G3 A0
Gordon displayed his versatility by scoring in all three of his Premier League appearances in March in a new-look centre-forward role, doubling his league tally for the season in the process. All the more impressive is the opposition against whom he netted; after opening the month with a goal in Newcastle United’s win against Man Utd, he then scored the winner against Chelsea, before going on to open the scoring against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.
Alex Iwobi (Fulham)
P4 W2 D1 L1 G1 A0
Often regarded as one of the more underrated players in the Premier League, Iwobi receives recognition for the effortless ingenuity he has provided in a deeper midfield role for Fulham, who are now firmly in contention for European qualification. The Nigerian scored a wonderfully unique goal in Fulham’s win against Spurs on the first day of March, using his instep to provide an accurate finish across goal from outside of the box.
David Raya (Arsenal)
P3 W3 D0 L0 CS2 S9
There is no more important cog in Arsenal’s league-leading defence than goalkeeper Raya, who increased his clean sheet tally for the season to 15 with shutouts against Brighton and Everton. Indeed, the only player to score past Raya in March was his own team-mate, Piero Hincapie, in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory against Chelsea on the first day of March. The Spaniard later ensured all three points by pulling off a mighty save in added time to deny an Alejandro Garnacho cross from creeping in at the far post.
Danny Welbeck (Brighton)
P4 W3 D0 L1 G3 A0
Welbeck scored matchwinning goals against Forest and Liverpool in March to help Brighton climb from 14th place to 10th in the Premier League table. His brace against Liverpool took his goal tally for the season up to 12, which is now the best return of the 35-year-old’s career. That double means he is also now the highest-scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season.
