Black Cats make it 11 league matches unbeaten against Magpies as they climb to 11th

Brian Brobbey snatched Sunderland a stunning 2-1 comeback win against Newcastle United to earn the Tyne-Wear derby bragging rights at St. James’ Park.

Brobbey secured all three points in the 90th minute, taking advantage after Malick Thiaw had seen a potential winner disallowed at the other end.

Anthony Gordon capitalised on Luke O’Nien’s loose pass early in the first half and coolly slotted across goal to score for the third Premier League game in a row to put Newcastle ahead.

Chemsdine Talbi cancelled that out after the break on the rebound, before Thiaw’s header was ruled out after Jacob Murphy interfered from an offside position with 15 minutes remaining.

And Brobbey prodded in from close range after his initial effort was saved, sending Sunderland up to 11th, leapfrogging Newcastle – who are now 12th – in the process.

How the match unfolded

Newcastle raced out of the blocks and, after Anthony Elanga headed over, Eddie Howe's side opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

O’Nien’s short pass inside his own box was intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who teed up Gordon to weave past his defender and drill a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Aaron Ramsdale was then at full stretch to keep out Talbi at the other end, while Newcastle almost doubled their lead before the break when Sven Botman’s header struck a post.

Sunderland responded well after half-time, with Granit Xhaka’s corner only half-cleared by Ramsdale, and Habib Diarra’s close-range effort was cleared off the line before Talbi drilled in the rebound in the 57th minute.

Thiaw then thought he had restored Newcastle’s lead, rising high to meet Lewis Hall’s corner, but Murphy was offside while challenging Melker Ellborg, with the goal disallowed.

Sunderland then broke quickly on the counter, and Enzo Le Fee pulled it back to Brobbey on the edge of the six-yard box, with the striker scoring on his second attempt after Ramsdale saved his first.
