Fernandes v Rogers: Which No 10 will come out on top at Old Trafford?

Two of the Premier League's best playmakers will go head-to-head on Sunday as the race for Champions League spots continues

Football writer Adrian Clarke identifies the key players, team tactics and where matches could be won and lost in Matchweek 30.

Player analysis: Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd) and Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Not all central attacking midfielders are built the same.

Creative imagination, positional intelligence, and outstanding distribution are traits usually associated with No 10s.

And it is hard to look past Man Utd captain Fernandes as someone who fits that criteria perfectly. Yet performing the same role in a very different way, is Villa’s Rogers.

England international Rogers is physically imposing, a powerful runner, someone who dribbles and shoots with great confidence and is shining in a fluid, ‘second striker’ type position.

The duo are both masters of their craft and their head-to-head at Old Trafford this weekend promises to be a fabulous watch, in a match that could have a huge impact on the race for UEFA Champions League places.

Can Rogers destroy United again?

Villa’s 2-1 home win over Man Utd in December arrived courtesy of a stunning individual performance from Rogers, who bagged a brilliant brace.

Unai Emery’s side were second best for most of the contest, and prevailed largely because of his inspiration inside the final third.

Rogers was operating on the left flank that day, where he used his running power to great effect for the opener, stretching play before cutting inside to curl an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

He tormented right-sided centre-back Leny Yoro throughout, and delivered another sumptuous finish to win the game in the second half.

These were two of six shots Rogers attempted against Man Utd in that last meeting.

This time around, Man Utd will use a back four, and Michael Carrick will certainly instruct his players to get a better handle on the Villa man.

Rogers must be tracked

Villa’s talisman has started the last seven Premier League games as a central No 10, but the return of fit-again John McGinn does give Emery an opportunity to move Rogers left if he wishes to change things up.

Man Utd must not allow Rogers to make forward runs that are not followed properly, wherever he is stationed.

Recently, he punished AFC Bournemouth for switching off, sprinting into the box undetected to lash home from Jadon Sancho’s slipped pass…

Rogers is a formidable athlete, covering 318.51km over the course of this campaign.

Only Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Martin Zubimendi of Arsenal have run further than the 23-year-old.

Rogers' most effective runs are inside the final third, where he consistently tries to surge into dangerous positions.

It is clear that out of possession, Carrick’s men must keep their wits about them as Ollie Watkins (fourth) and Rogers (fifth) make such a high frequency of runs, as shown in the table below.

Most off-ball runs into final third - PL 25/26
Player No. runs
Igor Thiago (BRE) 316
Enzo Fernandez (CHE) 315
Florian Wirtz (LIV) 284
Ollie Watkins (AVL) 277
Morgan Rogers (AVL) 270
Fernandes v Rogers: Number crunching

When you compare Fernandes to Rogers as a pure creator, the Portuguese playmaker is on a different level.

The Man Utd star is always looking to prise open defences - and his data is hugely impressive.

Rogers, who has just five assists to Fernandes’ 14, is a relatively low-touch player in comparison, and he rarely delivers an accurate cross from out wide.

Fernandes v Rogers chances created - PL 25/26

Big chances created 22 10
Chances created in open play 66 35
Through-balls 29 15
Succ. open-play crosses 16 2
Succ. passes in opp. half 820 418

Man Utd have benefitted greatly from Fernandes’ passing since he was unleashed by Carrick to play higher up the pitch than he did under Ruben Amorim.

Since Carrick took over, they have won all four matches at Old Trafford and have lost only once, away to Newcastle United on 4 March.

Fernandes v Rogers attacking stats compared 25/26

Goals (exc. pens) 4 8

Shot conversion rate % 16.28 17.02
Succ. dribbles 14 32

Despite occupying the same areas of the pitch, these two No 10s offer contrasting strengths, with Rogers dominating Fernandes when it comes to shots and ball carries. The heat maps below reflect this perfectly.

Villa’s main man breaks into the penalty area far more frequently than Fernandes, and from shooting positions it is Rogers who produces better and more consistent end product.

How Fernandes could be Villa’s worst nightmare

Villa are renowned for holding a high line under Emery, who loves his players to squeeze up to congest space in the middle third.

This has been problematic for them at times this season, and two of Joao Pedro’s goals for Chelsea in Villa's 4-1 Matchweek 29 defeat stemmed from through-balls which caught Emery's defence square.

Carrick’s game plan is likely to revolve around Fernandes executing passes which can hurt Villa in a similar way.

Fernandes is the best in the division at breaking the defensive line, so if Villa do not put him under enough pressure when the ball is at his feet, they will find themselves in trouble.

The Man Utd captain has created 10 more chances from line-breaking passes than any other top-flight player this season.

It is not as if Man Utd's skipper does not have pacy team-mates to look for with those incisive through balls either.

Bryan Mbeumo is the fifth-fastest Premier League player (top speed - 36.34km/hr) and in-form Benjamin Sesko was recently clocked at 35.31km/hr.

That makes the Serbian the fifth-fastest centre-forward in the Premier League.

Villa’s midfield must get close to Fernandes, otherwise those two players will relish running into the empty space behind their high line.

Two of the very best

Fernandes and Rogers have produced a combined 34 goals and assists in 2025/26, and each is very much the key man at making things happen from an attacking perspective.

The Villa playmaker's eight goals and five assists have usually arrived in tight matches too.

When you look at those contributions in isolation, they have been worth an extra 18 points to his team.

Fernandes, who is closing in on the Golden Playmaker award with 14 assists, has been sensational this season.

He has scored or assisted in 15 different matches and his direct goal contributions have earned a mammoth 23 of Man Utd's 51 Premier League points.

Will he or Rogers be the difference makers for their team yet again? The chances are strong.
