Michael Carrick (Man Utd)

Carrick may only have been in charge for two matches in January, taking over as head coach after Ruben Amorim departed, but in those games the former Manchester United midfielder beat the top two in the Premier League and has completely transformed their football. His reign got off to a flyer with a stunning 2-0 victory against rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby, before Carrick masterminded a 3-2 thriller against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium – the first time the Gunners lost at home in the league all season. Man Utd are back playing the kind of direct, free-flowing football that sets pulses racing at Old Trafford and has led to some early calls for Carrick to be given the job permanently.

Sean Dyche (Nottingham Forest)
P4 W2 D1 L1 GD+1
January was a pivotal month for Nottingham Forest in their pursuit of Premier League safety and Dyche guided them through a tough period superbly. They were on a run of four straight defeats when they produced the most important result of the month with a win against third-bottom West Ham United – their closest relegation rivals – in what could prove a crucial six-point swing at the end of the season. They also battled to a goalless draw with league leaders Arsenal, a match they were not expected to pick up any points in. With West Ham starting to apply pressure, Forest secured another unexpected result in the 2-0 win away from home against high-flying Brentford. Forest’s only defeat came against title challengers Aston Villa.

Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth)
P5 W3 D1 L1 GD+3
After a narrow defeat to Arsenal at the start of January, Bournemouth were deep in a concerning run of form in which they had not won in 11 games – including six defeats – and were about to lose their top scorer and star player Antoine Semenyo to Man City. But Iraola steadied the ship by going unbeaten for the rest of the month to stop an alarming slide down the table. They beat Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, drew with in-form Brighton and beat bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring an average of 2.2 goals per game in a month of thrilling football.

Liam Rosenior (Chelsea)
P3 W3 D0 L0 GD+5
Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca as Chelsea head coach at the start of the month, became only the fourth English manager to win his first three Premier League games, following Bobby Gould (Coventry City), Sam Allardyce (Bolton Wanderers) and Craig Shakespeare (Leicester City). The victories against Brentford, Crystal Palace and West Ham secured nine points that arrested a slump and kept Chelsea comfortably in the hunt for a top-four place. The 41-year-old is winning over any unconvinced fans with his tactical acumen, making key changes to turn defeats into victories, and delivering entertaining football. Chelsea are competing on multiple fronts and, in all competitions, Rosenior won six of his first seven games in charge.
