Brazilian winger Rayan continued his impressive start to life in the Premier League with AFC Bournemouth, as his fine second-half goal dented Aston Villa's title hopes in a 1-1 draw.
Villa entered Saturday's contest at the Vitality Stadium knowing that a win would provisionally lift them to second in the table ahead of Manchester City's heavyweight clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
Morgan Rogers' fine effort in the 22nd minute, which came against the general run of play, had them on course to do just that.
But Rayan, signed during the January transfer window from Vasco da Gama, earned the hosts a share of the spoils – his first Premier League goal coming after he registered an assist on debut in a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.
Bournemouth men pushed for a winner late on, with Ryan Christie twice being denied by outstanding saves from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. But it finished all square, meaning the Cherries move up to 11th in the table, while Villa remain third and level on 47 points with City.
How the match unfolded
Martinez made a vital double save early on, parrying Junior Kroupi's long-range effort straight into the path of Evanilson, whose tame follow-up header he gathered comfortably.
Villa were spared moments later by the offside flag and a brilliant piece of acrobatics from centre-back Ezri Konsa, who cleared Kroupi’s lobbed effort off the line.
Rogers then relieved the pressure, rifling into the roof of the net from a tight angle after some lovely interplay with Jadon Sancho, shortly after Ollie Watkins had one rightly ruled out for offside.
Bournemouth, to their credit, kept pushing and found a leveller 10 minutes after the break as Rayan surged forward and beat Martinez at the near post with a low, sliced finish.

The Cherries so nearly had the home fans celebrating late on as Christie saw two spectacular efforts superbly tipped away by Martinez, the first at full stretch and the second from point-blank range.

Rayan’s sweet start at Bournemouth continues
After a torrid mid-season run that saw them go 11 Premier League matches without a win, Iraola's side have responded impressively, winning three of their previous four games heading into this clash.
The Cherries remain firmly in contention for a surprise push towards European football, driven in large part by the immediate impact of Rayan.
The 19-year-old forward made an eye-catching Premier League debut by providing an assist for Alex Scott's late goal in Bournemouth’s 2-0 win over Wolves last weekend.
He continued that form against Villa, netting a superb equaliser to draw the Cherries level.
Prior to Rayan’s leveller, Bournemouth went close on several occasions to no avail, with Scott seeing a good shot blocked early on after Amine Adli's threaded set-up before stinging Martinez's palms with a drilled effort from range.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Bournemouth pushed on in search of a winner and went close when Adli fired inches wide from distance, before Christie was twice denied near-certain winners by a spectacular set of saves from Martinez.
Even so, the draw represents a positive outcome for the Cherries, who extended their unbeaten league run to five matches and will look to carry that momentum into their midweek Premier League trip to Everton.
Villa miss chance to move second
Premier League title hopefuls Villa arrived at the Vitality Stadium looking to put a frustrating result behind them after being contentiously denied a point in their 1-0 defeat to 10-man Brentford last time out.
With Unai Emery's side juggling a demanding schedule across domestic and continental competitions, recent weeks have tested their depth and consistency, though they are still flying high in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Europa League last 16 by finishing second in the league phase.
Any lingering frustration or fitness concerns were quickly brushed aside, though, as Villa weathered an early barrage from Bournemouth before Rogers put them ahead.

Shortly before Rogers' opener, Watkins had the ball in the net following some strong build-up, but the effort was ruled out immediately for offside.
Villa had to weather a fair few chances at the other end in the second half, including narrowly escaping a poor challenge on Scott on the edge of the area, with the referee waving away Bournemouth's penalty appeals following a VAR review.
In the end, Villa appeared to run out of steam and, given Bournemouth's threat in the final third, may feel fortunate to have left the Vitality Stadium with a point.
Emery will want his side to dust themselves off quickly and rediscover their winning form when they host Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek.

What the managers said
Andoni Iraola: "It’s a good point for us. [But] Looking at how the game has evolved it’s not enough for us. Before the game maybe you’d take a point. After the game I cannot be completely satisfied. We were the better team today.
"We had good chances. Martinez played a good game. We’ve done enough to win. We’d like to score a second one. I told the players at half-time we’re playing very well even though we were behind. We have to play the same way. It was a matter of time."
Unai Emery: "The second half we couldn’t [play how we wanted], they pushed us. They were in our box more times than we wanted. We tried to get some momentum to dominate. We created one chance with Matty Cash but they created more. It’s a very good point.
"We defended fantastically. It’s necessary to practice defending throw-ins and corners. A lot of duels. We must fight."
