Estevao stars as Chelsea beat Crystal Palace to go fourth

Brazilian scores second PL goal and creates another as Blues defeat 10-man Eagles 3-1 at Selhurst Park

Estevao, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez were all on target as Chelsea ran out comfortable 3-1 winners at Crystal Palace, who finished with 10 men on Sunday.

Estevao was the beneficiary of a Jaydee Canvot error and the 18-year-old put Chelsea ahead in the 34th minute at Selhurst Park with his first goal in the Premier League.

Joao Pedro doubled the Blues' lead five minutes after half-time with a drilled effort past Dean Henderson, and Fernandez's cool penalty just after the hour made sure of the points despite Chris Richards' late consolation.

Oliver Glasner's Palace side are now on an eight-match winless Premier League run, though Jean-Philippe Mateta will rue a golden early chance that could have altered the context of a game in which Adam Wharton was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The result means Palace remain 15th in the table, while Chelsea are up to fourth under Liam Rosenior – albeit Manchester United can go back above the Blues by beating leaders Arsenal.

How the match unfolded

Mateta was thwarted one-on-one by Robert Sanchez after Benoit Badiashile was caught dawdling in the early stages.

Fernandez then wastefully fired over from 12 yards and Moises Caicedo sliced wide from the edge of the area, while Ismaila Sarr clipped one past the post at the other end for Palace.

But the Blues went ahead after 34 minutes when Estevao raced on to Canvot's under hit back pass and fired past Henderson inside the penalty area.

Estevao flashed another effort wide on the counter just before the break, but five minutes after the restart, Chelsea were in cruise control.

Joao Pedro played a clever interchange with Estevao before racing into the right of the area, cutting back inside Wharton, and smashing his effort hard past Henderson.

Estevao saw a bending strike thwarted by Henderson, but Chelsea were awarded a penalty when referee Darren England pinged the luckless Canvot for handball following a pitch-side review.

Fernandez rolled his effort calmly into the bottom-right corner in the 64th minute, and Palace suffered more misery when Wharton received a second yellow and consequent red for a late tackle on Caicedo.

Richards headed home on the goalline with two minutes to play as Palace recycled well after Sanchez's excellent stop from Jefferson Lerma, but it was too little, too late.

Glasner frustrations grow

An emotional Glasner said he was feeling "abandoned" by Palace's hierarchy in the aftermath of last week's loss to Sunderland, and after seeing captain Marc Guehi sold to Manchester City.

The Eagles boss' mood will hardly have been improved by reports that Mateta had told Palace of his desire to be sold before the transfer window shuts.

With eight Premier League goals to his name this season, Mateta is a crucial cog in Palace's squad.

And yet, he wasted a glorious eighth-minute chance after he and Sarr combined to leave Badiashile in a bind, with the Frenchman now missing five of his last six Opta-defined big chances.

For Glasner, it was just one of several frustrations in a first half where you could certainly argue that Palace were the more coherent team, with Pedro Neto perhaps lucky to escape punishment for aiming a stamp towards Sarr, and Canvot's carelessness gifting Chelsea the lead.

The downward trend continued after the break, with Canvot unable to do little about Joao Pedro's shot striking his arm, but the denial of a clear goal meant a spot-kick was awarded.

When Wharton saw red, it really was just a day to forget for all of a Palace persuasion.

It is now 11 in all competitions without a win for Palace, whose season is in danger of unravelling. They will next try to stem the tide in a crucial trip to Nottingham Forest next Sunday.

Estevao shines as Chelsea's South American stars take centre stage

Chelsea have now won four of their five games in all competitions under Rosenior, and yet it would not be wholly unfair to say they remain a work-in-progress.

It was a similar feel to their 2-0 win over Brentford last weekend, insofar as it was not always the most fluent of performances, though Chelsea certainly found another gear in the second half.

And in wonderkid Estevao, Rosenior has one of the brightest talents in world football.

There may have been a huge gift from Canvot for the opening goal, but Estevao finished the job with the confidence and calmness of a seasoned star.

This may have only been his second Premier League goal, and first since he netted a last-gasp winner against Liverpool in October, but only some good work from Henderson denied him more glory.

He combined well throughout with Brazilian compatriot Joao Pedro and set up his team-mate to double the lead, before Argentina star Fernandez rounded out a win that had a real South American flavour.

Rosenior will hope to continue his good start in a midweek UEFA Champions League assignment at Napoli, before rivals West Ham United visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

What the managers said

Oliver Glasner: "Disappointing and frustrating. It looks like, right now, we are not good enough to win the game but we created our chances, we didn't take them and then we made too many mistakes to give the opponents the chances and they took it.

"When you've not won in 10 games the nerves are very thin and then you are 1-0 down and the players are frustrated. They feel we are in the game but 1-0 down again. These are tough moments, tough games. I look at the team and 3-0 down, a red card, you can go out five or six nil, but we came back, scored a goal and made a fight of it so that shows the great character of the group and that gives me a lot of confidence this group will turn it around."

Liam Rosenior: "Very pleased. This is always a very difficult place to come. Crystal Palace are a very good team. What the players have given is outstanding. It's frustrating to not have a clean sheet in the last few minutes - I wanted three in a row and we should've got one, we were 3-0 up against 10 men.

"But there's so much good. I thought we defended from the front, we were organised and were very clinical. All credit to the lads. We can be better on the ball, especially in the first half but in terms of what I want to see from a team performance, it was a very good one."

Since making his Chelsea debut in July 2025, Joao Pedro has both scored more goals (12) and been involved in more goals (16) than any other player across all competitions for the Blues.
