Thiago sets record for goals from a Brazilian in a single season

Striker’s 15th and 16th goals for Brentford take him past totals achieved by Cunha, Martinelli and Firmino

It is only the first week of January but Igor Thiago has already set a record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian player in one Premier League season.

The Brentford striker is now on 16 goals for the 2025/26 campaign, having scored twice as the Bees beat Sunderland 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.

With his first goal of the game, Thiago equalled the record of 15 scored by a Brazilian in a season, jointly held by three players: Matheus Cunha (in 2024/25 for Wolverhampton Wanderers), Gabriel Martinelli (2022/23 for Arsenal) and Roberto Firmino (2017/18 for Liverpool).

Thiago then grabbed a second against Sunderland to take his season’s tally to 16 and move ahead as the outright record holder.

Thiago has a chance to pull even further away, with Brentford having 17 more Premier League matches to play.

If he continues this form, with 16 goals from 21 matches, he could threaten entering the top 10 of top-scoring Brazilian players in the competition's history. Chelsea's Joao Pedro is 10th, with 28, one of six active Premier League players in the table.

However, Thiago will firstly have to recover from the injury that led to him being substituted in the 82nd minute of the Sunderland match.

Brentford's next Premier League fixture, following their FA Cup tie at Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday, is at Chelsea on Saturday 17 January.

Race for the Golden Boot

Thiago’s double also edged him closer in second to Manchester City forward Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot - the award presented to the top goalscorer at the end of the season.

The Bees striker is just four behind the 20 goals of Haaland, who also scored on Wednesday night. Haaland’s penalty for Man City in their 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion was his 150th for the club across all competitions in 173 appearances.
