Man Utd announce departure of Ruben Amorim

Club confirms head coach has left after 14 months in charge

Manchester United have announced the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim with immediate effect.

The 40-year-old was appointed by Man Utd 14 months ago, when he succeeded Erik ten Hag.

In a statement published on Monday morning, the club said: "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

"This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

"Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

It comes less than 24 hours after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Leeds United, after which tensions surfaced during Amorim's post-match press conference, with several tense exchanges including the Portuguese referencing his expectation of being "the manager, not a coach".

Man Utd have won eight and drawn seven of their first 20 matches in the Premier League this season. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two club Grimsby Town in the second round.

Overall, Amorim earned 58 points from his 47 league matches, with a goal difference of minus six. This return ranks Man Utd 14th in a table of Premier League points since his first day at the club, with Arsenal at the top on 103.

The Red Devils finished 15th at the end of Amorim's first campaign and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final, a defeat which meant they would not play any European football in 2025/26.

Man Utd strengthened their squad in the summer, signing three attacking players in Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. They also brought in Diego Leon, a left-back from Paraguay, and new first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, formerly of Royal Antwerp.

Who is Darren Fletcher?

Interim manager Fletcher, a former Man Utd and Scotland midfielder, has been in charge of the club's Under-18s this season. His twin sons, Jack and Tyler, are both in the first-team squad and were unused substitutes at Leeds on Sunday.

Fletcher is the club's fifth interim boss who won the Premier League title as a Man Utd player under Sir Alex Ferguson, following Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
