Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 20?

The Scout analyses the best armband options for this weekend's matches

The consistent Bukayo Saka (£10.3m) is among Erling Haaland's (£15.1m) main captain rivals in Gameweek 20 of Fantasy Premier League.

Arsenal's Saka has failed to score or assist in only two of his last nine appearances, whereas Manchester City's Haaland has five blanks across the same spell, including failures against Nottingham Forest and Sunderland in the last two Gameweeks alone.

Despite those blanks, Haaland has still amassed 33 points across the last four Gameweeks.

Hauls of 13 points against Crystal Palace and 16 points against West Ham United show his potential for huge returns, taking the Norwegian to eight double-figure scores for the campaign.

As the table below shows, Haaland's 33 points are bettered only by two players over the last four Gameweeks. Both are defenders in Fantasy,  Brentford's Keane Lewis-Potter (£4.9m) and the Norwegian's own team-mate Matheus Nunes (£5.4m).

Aston Villa pair Morgan Rogers (£7.5m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.6m) are also in form ahead of their home match against Nottingham Forest.

Rogers has scored four goals to total 32 points across the last four Gameweeks, while Watkins' three goals and two assists have helped him to 27 points - the same as Saka.

Recent runs of starts has been instrumental in the success of Man City's Rayan Cherki (£6.7m) and Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike (£9.1m).

Cherki has been Man City's top-performing midfielder over the last four Gameweeks, with a goal and two assists helping him earn 28 points.

Ekitike has also impressed ahead of Liverpool's visit to Fulham. He has scored three goals and supplied an assist across the same period to collect 29 points, just four behind Haaland.

Who's had the most attacking threat?

A delve into the data over those last four Gameweeks only serves to highlight the danger of going against Haaland with the armband.

He has had seven big chances - situations where a player is expected to score - as well as creating one of them for his team-mates.

This means Haaland has been involved in eight big chances over Gameweeks 16-19, more than any other player in Fantasy.

Both Watkins and Ekitike are among his nearest rivals on six big-chance involvements each, along with Kevin Schade (£7.0m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9m).

Watkins' six big chances rank second only to Haaland here, while Ekitike and Saka are joint-top on 13 shots in the box each.

West Ham's Jarrod Bowen (£7.6m) also features among the top goal threats ahead of the Hammers' visit to bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Who's facing the weakest defence?

A look at the team data over the last four Gameweeks shows that Chelsea have been the worst side for conceding big chances by some margin.

Haaland's visitors have allowed their opponents 21 such opportunities across the last four Gameweeks, seven more than any other side.

Elsewhere, Calvert-Lewin's prospects for more goals also look good ahead of Leeds' home encounter with Man Utd, while Brighton & Hove Albion's Georginio Rutter (£5.6m) and Danny Welbeck (£6.3m) can exploit Burnley's frailties at the back at Amex Stadium.

So, who is the best captain?

When both the player and team data are in agreeance, captaining Haaland looks a very straightforward decision.

Cherki's creativity will also play a big part if Pep Guardiola's side are to take advantage of Chelsea's form and there'd be no surprise if he also delivered more attacking returns. Similarly, both Rogers and Watkins can also enjoy more success in this weekend.

Saka's consistency does arguably make the strongest claim as the best alternative and there's no doubt his goal threat has stepped up markedly of late.

Yet there are too many factors here in Haaland's favour, and added to his massive 74 per cent ownership, it seems an unnecessary risk to go against him.
