Wilson stars as Fulham hand Burnley a seventh straight defeat

Welshman scores and creates two assists as Marco Silva's side secure thrilling 3-2 win at Turf Moor

Harry Wilson played a starring role as Fulham condemned Burnley to a seventh straight Premier League defeat, holding on for a 3-2 victory at Turf Moor.

Wilson was directly involved in all three goals for Marco Silva's side, who got back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats.

Crosses from the Wales winger set up goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Calvin Bassey in the first half, either side of Lesley Ugochukwu's neat finish for the hosts.

Wilson then got on the scoresheet himself just before the hour mark, with Oliver Sonne's late strike proving a mere consolation for Scott Parker's Clarets.

The victory takes Fulham to 13th in the table and seven points clear of 18th-placed West Ham United, while Burnley stay 19th, five points adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th.

How the match unfolded

Fulham broke the deadlock after just nine minutes as Wilson's whipped corner completely bamboozled the Burnley defence, and Smith Rowe reacted quickest to guide the ball in from close range.

The hosts responded well, however, and were back on level terms in the 21st minute. Having earlier been denied by Bernd Leno, Ugochukwu latched onto Josh Cullen's through-ball before neatly finishing with the outside of his boot.

But Burnley were undone following another set-piece 10 minutes later. After Wilson's initial corner was cleared, the Wales wideman smartly lifted the ball back into the six-yard box, where Bassey nodded home.

Leno parried Ugochukwu's fierce effort and denied Jacob Bruun Larsen from close range as the Clarets sought a second equaliser. Yet it was Fulham who scored next in the 58th minute with Samuel Chukwueze finding Wilson, who bent a brilliant shot into the far corner.

After Zian Flemming tested Leno, substitute Sonne gave Burnley hope with a well-taken strike four minutes from time, but it was too late to earn his side a share of the spoils.

Burnley's less than magnificent seven

Burnley have now lost seven successive Premier League games for the very first time, with the full-time whistle being greeted by a smattering of boos.

History suggested this could be a favourable fixture for the Clarets, who were unbeaten in each of their previous 29 home league meetings with Fulham, stretching back to April 1951.

However, set-pieces proved to be the hosts' undoing once again. Only West Ham, with 10, have conceded more goals from corners than Burnley in the Premier League this season (seven), with those frailties exposed for both of Fulham's opening two goals.

First, they were completely baffled by Wilson's quick, fizzed delivery that was turned in by Smith Rowe. The hosts were then slow to react on the second phase following another corner, with Wilson taking advantage by picking out Bassey to head home.

Burnley did end their run of three home games without scoring, courtesy of Ugochukwu's inventive finish, yet there was no way back once Wilson got in on the act, even if Burnley penned Fulham back for long periods in the latter stages.

Former Fulham boss Parker will hope his current side can finally stop the rot against another of his old clubs next Saturday, when Burnley visit AFC Bournemouth.

Wilson continues to shine

Fulham avoided the prospect of getting dragged back towards the bottom three, as they pulled even further clear with their first win at Turf Moor in 74 years.

Wilson continued his impressive form for Silva's men, with the Wales international now boasting at least one goal involvement on each of his last four Premier League appearances.

Fulham’s No 8 exposed Burnley’s set-piece difficulties with a superb near-post delivery for the opening goal. He later demonstrated his quality once again with a wonderful touch to control a high ball in the box, before lifting it across for Bassey to finish.

Wilson then gave Fulham breathing space with his second-half strike, though the visitors were holding on at the end after Sonne’s late goal.

Nevertheless, Fulham now have a healthy cushion to the relegation zone, and they will look to build on this momentum when they face Newcastle United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Their next two Premier League games are against two more teams below them in the table, at home to Nottingham Forest on 22 December and away to West Ham five days later.
