'I don't know what's going to happen' - Salah on Liverpool future

Mohamed Salah speaks about his future ahead of departing for Africa Cup of Nations next weekend

Mohamed Salah has spoken about his Liverpool future after being named as a substitute for a third Premier League match in a row as the Reds drew 3-3 with Leeds United on Saturday, where he was left on the bench again.

It was the penultimate match before Salah, the club's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, departs for the Africa Cup of Nations, where he will represent Egypt.

Salah will be unavailable for a period of weeks following next weekend's home match, against Brighton & Hove Albion, on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.

“This club, I always support it," Salah said after the draw with Leeds. "My kids will always support it. I love the club so much, I will always do. I called my mum yesterday - you guys didn’t know if I would start or not, but I knew.

“Yesterday I said to [my parents], ‘Come to the Brighton game.’ I don’t know if I am going to play or not but I am going to enjoy it. In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now.

“I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go the Africa Cup [of Nations]. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”

When pressed more about his future and if his eight-year Liverpool stay may soon come to an end, the 33-year-old said: “In football you never know.”

Salah then had a comment for his critics, suggesting he has been treated unfairly after a slow start to the season.

Since he joined Liverpool in June 2017, Salah has been one of the Premier League's best players, scoring 190 goals in the competition, the fourth-most of any player in history. His 89 assists rank second only to the 92 of Steven Gerrard for Liverpool, too.

But, this season he has managed only four Premier League goals.

“I have been at this club, scoring more than anyone in this generation since I came to the Premier League, I don’t think anyone has scored more goals and made more assists than me," he added. "In the whole Premier League. If I am somewhere else, everybody would go to the media and defend the players. I am the only one in this situation.

“Can I give an example? It’s silly but I am sorry. I remember a while go, Harry Kane was not scoring for 10 games, everyone in the media was like, ‘Oh, Harry will score for sure.’ When it comes to Mo, everyone is like, ‘He needs to be on the bench.’ I am sorry Harry!”
