Guardiola: Cherki's rabona assist? I never saw Messi do that!

Man City playmaker dedicates amazing cross for Foden to fans but manager calls for simplicity

When the replay of Rayan Cherki's rabona assist to Phil Foden for Manchester City's third goal in the 3-0 defeat of Sunderland was shown on the big screens in the Etihad Stadium, the reaction from the fans was audible above the celebration of the goal.

"Yeah, I heard it [the crowd’s reaction], just for the fans because I want to give the pleasure to others," Cherki told the Man City website.

"I want to play for Phil [Foden], for Omar [Marmoush] and for Erling [Haaland].

"It’s my quality, I want to try all the time when I have the ball. Today it was good because it was a good pass for Phil."

Cherki's manager, however, suggested that perhaps in future he would prefer the Frenchman not to over-elaborate by using his right foot to cross behind his left.

"No, that was the first time," Pep Guardiola answered, when asked if Cherki had done such a cross in training.

"Rayan has a special, unique quality. Sometimes you love him, sometimes you hate him but he’s special — a composer mentality. He has something that just mum and dad gave to him."

When asked if he gives his players the freedom to perform things like the rabona, Guardiola replied: "I want him to make a good cross. If he doesn’t make a good cross, I don’t like it. He did it and it’s fine."

The former Barcelona head coach added: "I never saw Messi doing these kind of things. Messi’s the best player to play the game.

"The biggest quality of Messi is the simplicity of Messi, the simple things he does perfectly. The biggest players like Rayan have to learn this. But he’s so young."

The cross took Cherki to five Premier League assists this season, putting him joint-first in the standings for the Coca-Cola Playmaker of the Season award, alongside Tottenham Hotspur winger Mohammed Kudus and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

And former Premier League footballer Danny Murphy sees that total growing this season after a match in which Cherki topped the rankings for chances created (six), touches of the ball (104) and duels contested (14).

"Cherki is capable of opening up teams at any moment with a bit of brilliance," the former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder told BBC Sport.

Murphy added: "From watching recent games, Cherki is starting to build a nice relationship with Erling Haaland.

"When you are a centre-forward, you want players prepared to take a risk with the final ball and Cherki is certainly a risk-taker. He showed unbelievable skill today, not only for the rabona assist, and is going to play a huge part for them moving forward."
