Premier League participates in South American anti-piracy operation

Over 500 illegal streaming websites blocked and 46 warrants executed in latest phase of ‘Operation 404’

The Premier League’s involvement in the latest phase of anti-piracy initiative "Operation 404", which is led by authorities in Brazil, has seen further enforcement action carried out against pirate operators across South America.

Operation 404, which was initially launched in 2019, targets illegal streaming services with a range of different measures, including the blocking of websites and targeted aids.

The Premier League became the first sports body directly involved in Operation 404 in 2023 and has continued its support and involvement since.

Last week’s action was the eighth phase of the operation, which is led by the Cyber Operations Laboratory of Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security. It is carried out alongside various partners, which includes the UK Intellectual Property Office, accompanied by participating authorities from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador and Peru. The latest phase of action saw 535 illegal streaming websites blocked, as well as the execution of 42 search and seizure warrants and four arrest warrants.

Through its involvement in Operation 404 and multiple other initiatives across the world, the Premier League remains committed to tackling piracy and works closely with broadcast partners and other bodies in doing so.
