John Brooks was the man in the middle for the recent Fulham v Wolverhampton Wanderers fixture, and the video below shares how he manages players jostling at corners, fouls and so on, using clear verbal communication to provide instructions and explanations to players, while also building a rapport with them.

"There's constant communication with the players, sometimes with a small smile, sometimes with a small word - but sometimes you have to be really strong with the players," Brooks told former Premier League striker Michael Owen after watching the footage back.

"I think we saw [in the film] there was a corner there and some of the players were getting a little out of hand, so I laid down the law, if you like.

"But player relations are really important to me. We want to have good relationships with the players, and that's why there's the constant dialogue throughout the game."
