Igor Thiago hits double as Brentford extend Newcastle's away woes

Brazilian scores seventh and eighth goals of the season as Bees come from behind to beat 10-man opponents

Brentford produced a fine second-half turnaround as they recovered from a goal down to beat 10-man Newcastle United 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The visitors hit the front in the 28th minute as Harvey Barnes finished strongly after showing some excellent skill inside a crowded penalty area.

But Brentford were sharper after half-time and earned a deserved equaliser from yet another long throw, as Kevin Schade stooped low to head home following Michael Kayode's delivery.

The home side were then awarded a penalty when Dan Burn fouled Dango Ouattara, which resulted in the Newcastle centre-back receiving a second yellow card. Igor Thiago calmly converted from the spot, then added another goal from open play in stoppage time.

Brentford move into 12th place in the Premier League table, four points clear of Newcastle, who are 14th and only two points clear of the relegation zone.

How the match unfolded

Brentford created the first chance as Nick Pope was required to parry a curling free-kick from Mikkel Damsgaard, with Burn making a crucial block as Nathan Collins looked to pounce upon the rebound.

However, Newcastle took the lead from their first real attack of the match, as Barnes smartly turned past two Brentford defenders inside the area before finishing through the legs of Caoimhin Kelleher.

Keith Andrews' hosts applied more pressure on the Newcastle back line after the break and got their reward in the 56th minute, as Sven Botman could only direct a header from Kayode’s long throw into the path of Schade, who nodded into the net.

It got better for the Bees as Burn was given a second yellow card after challenging Ouattara – who had earlier been booked for simulation – inside the area, with Thiago giving his side the lead from the spot with 12 minutes to play.

The Brazilian then added another strike on the break, five minutes into stoppage time, taking advantage of Malick Thiaw's loose touch to make sure of the result.

Brentford's strong home form continues

Despite a 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace the previous weekend, Brentford had still acquired 13 points from their first 10 games for the fourth consecutive season, a particularly impressive feat after Andrews had stepped up to replace Thomas Frank.

They largely controlled the beginning of the match, but struggled to convert that dominance with the ball into clear-cut opportunities.

Brentford had barely been threatened defensively before they went behind to Barnes’ strike, which came after the Bees cheaply surrendered possession in a dangerous area.

They stepped things up further in the second half, though, and they got their reward through their ninth goal from a long throw since the beginning of last season, along with a Thiago brace.

Ouattara was also a constant threat. He was cautioned for simulation following one challenge from Burn, but the forward was not deterred and drew a similar tackle to win Brentford's penalty.

Andrews’ side have lost just once in their opening six home matches of the season, winning four of them, already making the Gtech an unwelcoming place for visiting teams.

Brentford’s next match is a visit to Brighton & Hove Albion in two weeks’ time.

More away-day blues for Magpies

Newcastle’s poor domestic form continued last weekend with a 3-1 loss to West Ham United, making it their worst start to a Premier League season under head coach Eddie Howe.

However, they continue to thrive in Europe after beating Athletic Club 2-0 in midweek to register their third consecutive UEFA Champions League victory.

The Magpies’ lack of attacking threat was apparent once again in the opening stages of Sunday's game, but they still went in front as Barnes kept his composure to slam an effort home with his weaker foot after a clever dummy.

But despite taking the lead, Newcastle never looked close to adding to their advantage and their defence was eventually breached after they failed to properly clear their lines from Kayode's long throw for Brentford.

The game-changing moment then came with 17 minutes to go, as Newcastle went a goal and a man down following Burn's mistimed challenge on Ouattara.

The Magpies are now winless in nine Premier League away games, and Barnes' goal represented their only effort on target throughout the match, with Nick Woltemade enduring another quiet outing, aside from his involvement in the build-up to the opener.

Howe has plenty to consider throughout the international break, after which Newcastle host Manchester City.

What the managers said

Keith Andrews: "I think in the first half we edged the game but we didn't create too many clear opportunities and then I think in the second half, we upped things in all departments.

"It's always about the reactions and we were nice and calm at half-time and spoke about what we needed to fine-tune. Adding a level of calmness to the second half was key. Stopping transitions was a big part of it and we were worthy of the win."

Eddie Howe: "Desperately disappointing result. It was always going to be a difficult game today. We dealt with the physical challenge really well in the first half and then the goals came at very bad times for us. It is a disappointing performance and result, and we have to take that on the chin. There is no excuse for it.

"We weren't creating a lot of chances in the game and we took the one we did. We were looking for the second goal but the reality of that was very different. We defended their throws and set-pieces well in the first half and then it went from bad to worse with the penalty, and then we never really recovered."

Brentford won a Premier League match in which they trailed at half-time for the first time since November 2023 against West Ham, having lost 20 of 22 such games since then prior to Sunday (D2).

Barnes netted his 50th Premier League goal, in what was his 17th appearance in the competition since scoring his 49th against Crystal Palace in April. Only from August 2019 to January 2020 had he ever had a longer run of appearances without scoring in the competition (18).

Brentford have won six of their last nine home games in the Premier League (D1 L2), this after failing to triumph in any of their previous eight at the Gtech beforehand (D3 L5).

Since the start of last season, Brentford have scored nine Premier League goals from throw-in situations, at least double that of any other side (Crystal Palace with four).
