Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira dismissed after winless start

Head coach departs as Wolves sit in 20th place in the Premier League and are without a win in 10 matches

Wolverhampton Wanderers have dismissed head coach Vitor Pereira after the 3-0 defeat at Fulham on Saturday left the club bottom of the table on two points and without a win from their opening 10 matches of the season.

A statement from Wolves said: “Vitor and his team worked tirelessly for Wolves and helped guide us through a challenging period last season, for which we are grateful.

“Unfortunately, the start to this season has been a disappointment and, despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and matches to find an improvement, we have reached a point where we must make a change.

“We thank Vitor and his staff for their efforts and wish them the very best for the future.”

Pereira had taken over from Gary O’Neil in December last year, after Wolves had suffered a 10-match winless start to the campaign. He inherited a side in 19th place, with only nine points from 16 matches.

The Portuguese engineered a brilliant turnaround, earning seven points from his first three matches and winning a club-record six league matches in a row to secure their Premier League status in April, finishing 17 points clear of the relegation zone in 16th. This earned him a nomination for the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Season award

However, Wolves failed to claim another league victory after that winning run and started the season with four straight losses. Despite this, Pereira agreed a new three-year deal with the club in September.

Pereira is the fourth manager or head coach to be dismissed in the Premier League this season after Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest), Graham Potter (West Ham) and Ange Postecoglou (Nottingham Forest).

Wolves are next in action away to Chelsea on 8 November.
