The Premier League's official hi-vis PUMA match ball for 2025/26 has been unveiled and will make its on-pitch debut on Saturday 8 November, when Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester United.
This season is PUMA’s first as the official ball supplier for the Premier League. The PUMA match ball has hit the back of the net 209 times in the first 80 matches of a thrilling 2025/26 campaign so far.
But why does there need to be a winter ball and what are its origins?
When was the first Premier League winter ball introduced?
The first Premier League winter ball was introduced in the 2004/05 season.
This inaugural ball was used for two seasons but from 2008/09 onwards, a new winter ball was introduced each season, along the same lines as the main ball.
The PUMA "Under the Lights" ball will be the 20th different hi-vis ball in the Premier League.
When does the change of ball occur?
The introduction of the PUMA hi-vis ball coincides with the switch from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), when the clocks go back one hour in the UK. This year, the clocks will go back on Sunday 26 October at 02:00.
The return to GMT comes as the amount of daylight reduces. By the winter equinox of 21 December, the sun will be setting at about 16:00 GMT, meaning that the majority of Premier League matches will be played under floodlights.
The vibrant colourway of the "Under The Lights" edition of the PUMA ball optimises its visibility so that players, match officials, supporters in the stands and TV viewers can track its movement more easily.
How long will we see the winter ball for?
The Hi-Vis balls are traditionally in play until early spring. In the early years, the main white ball returned but from 2019/20 a third ball has been used for the remainder of the campaign.
Where can I buy the hi-vis Premier League PUMA ball?
The "Under the Lights" edition of ball is available to buy today in PUMA stores and selected retailers worldwide. It can also be bought online from the Premier League shop and from PUMA.com.
