Guardiola: I won't think about a break until 2035!

Man City manager responds to former colleague's suggestion he needs to rest and "regenerate"

Pep Guardiola insists he has no intention of taking a break from management and has joked that he will only consider it in 10 years' time.

The Manchester City boss is the Premier League's longest-serving manager, having been in charge since August 2016, but he is adamant that he remains full of energy and enthusiasm as he attempts to win his seventh Premier League title in nine seasons.

Carles Planchart, who worked under Guardiola as a performance analyst at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Man City, was quoted as saying his former boss should take a break and "regenerate."

"In 2035, I will start to think about it," Guardiola quipped, when asked during his pre-match press conference for Man City’s home meeting with Everton if he will consider stepping away from football.

'I think I have the energy'

Guardiola's current contract will expire at the end of the 2026/27 season, but the 54-year-old says the improvements he has seen from his side are keeping him motivated.

"At the moment, I think I have the energy with my players to simply make a better season than last season," the Man City boss explained.

"This is my target. I am never sitting here at the start of November and December and going to say we are going to win this or that.

"I see things that we are doing much better than last season and in every game, we are a little bit better.

"There is the margin that we can do better in many aspects and that gives me the energy that it's not job done. It's completely unfinished business. That's why I am here."

He praised the current form of his No 9, Erling Haaland, who is the Premier League’s top scorer with nine goals in seven games.

"Yeah, I think it's the best shape he has been in," said Guardiola. "He is doing really well right now. His performance levels are outstanding.

"But you cannot sustain this level always. When he is going to drop, I will be there. We will be there. We just have to sustain his levels. He doesn't need compliments and anything special."

Rodri not ready

Guardiola had less than positive news when providing an update on midfielder Rodri, revealing the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner will miss Saturday’s match and admitting he is unsure when he will return.

Rodri limped off just 22 minutes into the 1-0 victory at Brentford before the international break and missed most of last season after sustaining a serious knee injury.

"[There is] no news. He is not ready for tomorrow," said Guardiola. "I don't know when he will be back."
