Best picks for FPL Challenge as players earn SIX extra points for big chances scored

See our top choices for Gameweek 8 as FPL managers take on content creator WillNE

This week in FPL Challenge, Fantasy managers are pitted against content creator WillNE. In this week's challenge, named "Ice Cold", players will earn an additional six points for every big chance that they score.

A big chance is classified as a situation where the player is expected to score.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, managers will be able to go head-to-head with content creator WillNE.

Every bottle and can of Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar sold in the UK and Ireland has a QR code which provides entry to the head-to-head duels where they can win more than 20,000 prizes, including match tickets.

Managers outside the UK will still be able to take part in the weekly challenges as usual, but will not be eligible to enter the head-to-head element and win prizes.

Managers have an unlimited budget to pick their 6-a-side team, however they can only choose one player per club.

Here, The Scout assesses the best picks for Gameweek 8.

What is the best formation for Gameweek 8?

The scoring metric this week favours midfielders and forwards.

Opting for a 1-1-3 or a 1-2-2 formation prioritises those players more likely to register and score big chances.

Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi are the defenders with the highest number of big chances so far this season.

But there are a combined 17 midfielders and forwards who have received more big chances. This highlights why the attacking positions are more likely to bring the reward of the additional six points.

Which defences should managers target?

Some teams this season have conceded far more big chances than others, and these are likely to be the ones to target for this week's FPL Challenge picks.

Teams' big chances conceded, home v away matches
Home side Big chances conceded (home matches) Away side Big chances conceded (away matches)
Nott'm Forest 8 Chelsea 5
Brighton 5 Newcastle 2
Burnley 7 Leeds 6
Crystal Palace 8 Bournemouth 6
Man City 5 Everton 6
Sunderland 3 Wolves 4
Fulham 4 Arsenal 1
Spurs 4 Aston Villa 6
Liverpool 3 Man Utd 13
West Ham 13 Brentford 9

West Ham have conceded the most big chances in home matches so far this season. The data suggests that the Hammers, along with Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, have the potential to concede the most big chances in Gameweek 8.

Likewise, Manchester United have conceded the most big chances away from home, with 13. Brentford could also be a team to target, having allowed nine big chances on their travels.

It should be noted that Arsenal have only conceded one big chance on the road this season, while Newcastle have only allowed two.

Meanwhile, at home, Liverpool and Sunderland have limited their visitors to the smallest number of big chances, with just three apiece.

Best midfield options

Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo leads the way for both big chances and big chances scored among midfielders.

The Ghanaian faces a Palace side who rank joint-second for the most big chances conceded at home. He is joined on three big chances scored alongside Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, Burnley winger Jaidon Anthony and Palace's Ismaila Sarr.

Both Anthony and Sarr have scored three of their four big chances this season, with Fernandez converting 50 per cent of his big chances.

Midfielders' big-chance statistics, 25/26
Player Big chances total  Big chances scored Big-chance conv. rate
Antoine Semenyo  7 3 43%
Enzo Fernandez  6 3 50%
Jaidon Anthony 4 3 75%
Ismaila Sarr 4 3 75%
Bruno Fernandes 4 2 50%
Mohamed Salah 4 1 25%
Iliman Ndiaye 3 3 100%
Brajan Gruda 3 1 33%
Dango Ouattara 3 1 33%

Bukayo Saka has had two big chances this season and has scored both of them. Spurs' Brennan Johnson and Leeds United's Noah Okafor also find themselves in this position.

If any of them are named in the starting XI for their respective clubs, they could be great options this week. Remember, you can see the starting line-ups and make changes to your team up until the kick-off of each match.

Like Saka, Johnson and Okafor, Everton's Iliman Ndiaye also has a 100 per cent big-chance conversion rate. The midfielder has scored all of his three big chances.

Which forwards to pick?

Erling Haaland has had 14 big chances over the opening seven Gameweeks, impressively scoring from eight of those.

Forwards' big-chance statistics, 25/26
Player Big chances total  Big chances scored Big chance conv. rate
Erling Haaland  14 8 57%
Jean-Philippe Mateta 9 2 22%
Viktor Gyokeres 6 2 33%
Dominic Calvert-Lewin 5 0 0%
Igor Thiago 5 4 80%
Danny Welbeck  5 2 40%
Rodrigo Muniz 4 1 25%
Benjamin Sesko 4 2 50%
Ollie Watkins 4 1 25%
Nick Woltemade 4 2 50%
Chris Wood  4 1 25%

However, as with the midfielders, it's not just about having the big chances, it's also about scoring them.

Igor Thiago has converted four of his five big chances this season and faces a West Ham side who have conceded the most big chances of all the teams playing at home in Gameweek 8.

Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has had nine big chances this season, placing him second in his position behind Haaland. However, with only two converted, he has a big-chance conversion rate of just 22 per cent.

Chelsea's Joao Pedro and Sunderland's Wilson Isidor have both converted 100 per cent of their big chances.

With Chelsea and Sunderland facing vulnerable defences in Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively, they could be good differential picks.

Best of the defenders

While defenders generally register fewer big chances than their more attacking counterparts, a number of them have had, and scored, big chances this season.

Defenders' big-chance statistics, 25/26
Player Big chances total  Big chances scored Big-chance conv. rate
Trevoh Chalobah 3 2 66%
Marc Guehi 3 0 0%
Daniel Ballard 2 0 0%
Gabriel  2 1 50%
Michael Keane 2 0 0%
Maximilian Kilman 2 0 0%
Sepp van den Berg 2 0 0%

With managers only able to select one player per club, they would be unable to select Gabriel if they pick either Saka or Viktor Gyokeres.

This makes options like Sunderland's Daniel Ballard, or team-mate Omar Alderete, who has scored from his only big chance, attractive options in defence.

Sunderland host a Wolves side who have, alongside Nottingham Forest, scored only five goals - the fewest in the league - making a clean sheet a real possibility.
