Loum Tchaouna’s stunning strike from range helped Burnley climb out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Leeds United.
Substitute Tchaouna picked out the top-left corner from around 30 yards out in the 68th minute, doubling his side's lead as Burnley prevailed at Turf Moor in a battle of last season's top two in the Championship.
Lesley Ugochukwu had earlier opened the scoring on Saturday, heading home from Kyle Walker's delightful cross just 18 minutes into the match.
Scott Parker’s side had to withstand long spells of Leeds pressure but outfought their visitors for just their second Premier League win of the season, having also beaten Sunderland at home.
The hosts climb above Nottingham Forest to 17th place and within a point of Daniel Farke’s side, who stay 15th after missing the chance to move into the top half.
How the match unfolded
After Dominic Calvert-Lewin sent an acrobatic volley over early on, Burnley struck first in the 18th minute, with Ugochukwu unmarked in the six-yard box to head home Walker's inviting cross.
Leeds almost responded when Jack Harrison played in Brenden Aaronson, but Martin Dubravka produced a smart reflex save to divert his shot on to a post, before denying Anton Stach's fierce free-kick prior to half-time.
Farke's side continued to control possession into the second half, with Harrison firing a bouncing volley over from Aaronson’s cross when free at the back post.
However, Leeds’ lack of a cutting edge was punished in emphatic fashion as Tchaouna’s thumping left-footed effort left goalkeeper Karl Darlow grasping at thin air.
Leeds squandered a great opportunity to respond soon after when Jayden Bogle somehow lifted over the crossbar from point-blank range before substitutes Lukas Nmecha and Joel Piroe both failed to find the target in a disappointing fourth league defeat.
Burnley battle their way out of the bottom three
Burnley ended a five-match winless streak with an important victory to lift themselves out of the bottom three, with all seven of their points coming at Turf Moor.
Goal difference was the decider between the Clarets and Leeds in last season's Championship, with the latter lifting the trophy at their rivals' expense, but Burnley exacted some revenge here.
Much of Parker's success in a 100-point season last season was based on a rock-solid defence, which conceded just 16 goals – only one more than they have already let in this campaign.
Following Ugochukwu’s opener, they demonstrated their credentials at that end of the field, digging deep and Dubravka making a couple of smart saves to keep Leeds at bay.
Tchaouna’s heroics then made the result certain, though it was only poor finishing from their opponents that prevented any potential late scares.
Two of Burnley's next three games come against the bottom two in Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, and Parker will be hoping to push further up the table after a morale-boosting win.
Leeds’ profligacy punished
Despite beating Wolves last time out on the road, you must go back to April 2022 for the last time Leeds recorded successive Premier League away victories.
Not only that, but they have only kept a single clean sheet in 25 top-flight games away from Elland Road.
Leeds, who made changes to their starting XI for the first time in five games, were undone when their defence was slow to react to Walker’s cross, with Ugochukwu taking full advantage to head Burnley in front.
Although, there was nothing they could do about Tchaouna’s wonder strike.
It was at the other end of the field where Farke’s side struggled. Despite enjoying over two-thirds of the possession and registering an Expected Goals (xG) of 1.67 from their 19 attempts, just four were on target.
Noah Okafor's injury left Farke desperately short in attack, with Harrison and Aaronson rarely feeding Calvert-Lewin.
Their profligacy was epitomised by Bogle’s miss from inside the six-yard box, as well as Nmecha’s close-range header that also went over.
That is something they must address ahead of welcoming West Ham to Elland Road next weekend, before they head into the November international break off the back of successive away games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Forest.
Club reports
What the managers said
Scott Parker: "First and foremost a massive result for us. We went toe to toe with Leeds last year and really had some tough games, a really good side, a competitive team, so to get the result is really pleasing."
"I thought large parts of our performance were impressive, the first goal is brilliant, and in the second half there were elements where we needed to show another side."
Daniel Farke: "I can't blame the lads too much. You can't have better statistics than we had today in an away game at this level."
"Even when Arsenal, Liverpool and City come here they will not have those statistics. But in football it is all about the goals and we were not effective enough today."
