Shearer's Team of the Week: Wharton was the best midfielder by a mile

Premier League's record goalscorer names Crystal Palace star in his weekly line-up after superb display against Liverpool

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton once again showcased his incredible talent in the middle of the pitch, as his side deservedly won 2-1 against Premier League champions Liverpool.

Against a midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, Wharton stood out as he nullified their threat and dictated the play.

After that wonderful performance, Wharton was labelled as the "best midfielder by a mile on the day" by Alan Shearer, the Premier League's record goalscorer and a Hall of Fame inductee.

Shearer's weekly line-up includes Wharton, three other Palace players, and their manager Oliver Glasner.

Robin Roefs (Sunderland)
"Imperious in goal, making six saves to keep Nottingham Forest out as Sunderland won 1-0."

Omar Alderete (Sunderland)
"An excellent header which proved to be the winner, and a rock-solid display in the heart of defence."

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)
"Outstanding from the first minute to last and even provided the assist that won Palace the match. No wonder Liverpool wanted to sign him!"

Tyrick Mitchell (Crystal Palace)
"Kept Mohamed Salah quiet all afternoon. The Liverpool winger had no joy down Mitchell's side."

Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace)
"What a return from injury! Outstanding in everything he did, making several good runs and opening the scoring."

Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
"Competing against Liverpool's formidable trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, Wharton was the best midfielder by a mile."

Declan Rice (Arsenal)
"He was everywhere, racing back to deny Jacob Murphy with a brilliant block, before coming up with the crucial assist for Arsenal's equaliser with an excellent cross."

Jeremy Doku (Man City)
"He's now adding end product to his game after forcing the opening goal and then setting up another in Man City's emphatic 5-1 win against Burnley."

Danny Welbeck (Brighton)
"Won Brighton the match with his two goals after coming off the bench. Even at 34, Welbeck is still going strong."

Erling Haaland (Man City)
"Another two goals, and he created one too. Haaland is absolutely ruthless and he's going to take some stopping as he targets another Golden Boot."

Igor Thiago (Brentford)
"Scored two fine goals and ran Manchester United ragged all afternoon. They had no answer to his pace, power and finishing."

Manager: Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace)
"To say he's transformed Palace would be an understatement. Glasner has been nothing short of sensational, and his team fully deserved their hugely impressive win against the champions."
