Eddie Nketiah's sensational stoppage-time winner as Crystal Palace ended Liverpool's perfect start to the season was one of EIGHT goals scored in the 90th minute or later on Saturday - the most in a single day in the competition’s history.
That drama continued on Sunday as two late Arsenal goals, including another one in stoppage time, completed a stunning 2-1 turnaround victory at Newcastle United to ignite the title race as the Gunners went two points behind the leaders.
This late drama was not unique to Matchweek 6 of the 2025/26 season. It is a trend that has been prevalent throughout the 60 matches this campaign.
So far, 21 goals have been scored after the 90-minute mark this season, or 13.5 per cent of all goals. This is five percentage points higher than the share of last season, when 95 goals or 8.5 per cent were scored in added time.
Incredibly, 18.6 per cent of match-winning goals this campaign have come in stoppage time, with eight winners. That is more than DOUBLE the previous-highest percentage for a season, which was 9.1 per cent in 2023/24.
Aside from the late drama at St James' Park - and not forgetting Brighton & Hove Albion's 3-1 win at Chelsea, where Maxim De Cuyper and Danny Welbeck scored on 90+2 minutes and 90+10 minutes respectively - the early signs indicate that this early-season trend could continue.
The tone was set from the opening fixture of the season, when Liverpool scored two late goals through Federico Chiesa (88mins) and Mohamed Salah (90+4mins) to clinch a 4-2 victory over AFC Bournemouth.
The champions are proving to be the late-goal specialists in 2025/26, with Salah's penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time at Burnley making them the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches thanks to a winning goal scored in the final 10 minutes or later.
While Liverpool have scored a competition-high six goals in the 80th minute or later so far, other teams including Arsenal (four goals), Sunderland, Manchester City and Brighton (all three), have also made strong finishes.
Teams with goals after 80+ mins 25/26
Team | Goals |
Liverpool | 6 |
---|---|
Arsenal | 4 |
Brighton, Man City, Sunderland, West Ham | 3 |
Brentford, Fulham, Spurs | 2 |
Almost a quarter (22.6 per cent) of goals scored this season have come in the 80th minute or later. The share was only 18 per cent last season and the previous high was 19.5 per cent in 2009/10.
Only four teams have yet to score after the 80-minute mark: Aston Villa, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
