'The work has already started' - West Ham appoint Nuno as head coach

West Ham United have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new coach, succeeding Graham Potter, whose exit was announced on Saturday morning.

Nuno comes in to take charge of his fourth Premier League club, following spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

What did Nuno say?

“I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United,” he told the club's website. “My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be.

"The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”

Why are West Ham hiring Nuno?

The 51-year-old Portuguese arrives at West Ham in similar circumstances to what he did at Forest.

There he succeeded Steve Cooper in December 2023, with Forest struggling in 17th, with one win in 13 matches. He steered them to safety, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Then in 2024/25, his first full season at the City Ground, Nuno led Forest to a seventh-placed finish, earning the club qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Nuno's Premier League managerial record
  P W D L Win % PPM
Wolves 114 43 32 39 37.7% 1.41
Nott’m Forest 62 26 13 23 41.9% 1.47
Spurs 10 5 0 5 50.0% 1.5
Total 186 74 45 67 39.8% 1.44
Why was Potter dismissed?

He took charge of the club in January 2025 from Julen Lopetegui while they lay in 14th place. They finished the season in the same place, with only five league wins from the remaining 18 matches.

Things did not improve this season, the 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace a week ago leaving the club in 19th place, with three points from five fixtures. Also they exited the EFL Cup at the first attempt, losing 3-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in August.

What’s next for West Ham?

Nuno doesn’t have long to prepare for his first match as West Ham are next in Premier League action on Monday night, at Everton, coincidentally facing former manager David Moyes, who steered the club to UEFA Conference League success in May 2023 before his departure a year later with their best points average in the Premier League.
