Which chip should you use in FPL Gameweek 6?

The Scout on whether to play the Wildcard, Triple Captain, Free Hit or Bench Boost

Over 600,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have activated a chip ahead of the Gameweek 6 deadline at 11:00 BST on Saturday 27 September, with Manchester City's fixture at home to Burnley, coupled with popular assets underperforming and dropping in price, making it a popular option for many managers.

Remember, you CANNOT use more than one chip in any Gameweek.

Wildcard

The Wildcard is the most used chip ahead of Gameweek 6 so far, with over 300,000 managers activating the chip.

Playing the Wildcard allows you to remove underperforming players who are decreasing in value, such as Morgan Rogers (£6.9m), Florian Wirtz (£8.3m), Ollie Watkins (£8.8m) and Marc Guiu (£4.3m) and then buy players who are in-form and rising in value, like Marcos Senesi (£4.7m), Antoine Semenyo (£7.7m) and Erling Haaland (£14.3m).

It will also allow you to take advantage of upcoming fixture swings for the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Man City; targeting differentials such as Bukayo Saka (£9.8m), Enzo Fernandez (£6.7m), Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m), as well as the more obvious picks.

However, many Fantasy managers will be able to purchase Haaland using free transfer(s) or a by taking a points hit. It could then be worth saving the Wildcard until Gameweek 13, making it straightforward to buy Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and potentially Alexander Isak (£10.5m), when Liverpool's fixtures turn favourably once again.

Triple Captain

The top-scoring player in FPL this season, Haaland, takes on Burnley at home in Gameweek 6. The Norwegian has already been bought by 670,000+ Fantasy managers and risen in price ahead of the deadline.

The Clarets rank bottom for Expected Goals Against, with 10.47, and second-bottom for big chances conceded, with 13.

Furthermore, no player has a better Expected Goal Involvement (6.73) and total of big chances (10) than Haaland.

On paper, this looks to be the perfect match-up of form and fixture to deploy the Triple Captain chip, particularly after Haaland was declared to be "ready" by Pep Guardiola in Friday's pre-match press conference.

One note of caution would be what Burnley did against Liverpool in Gameweek 4, keeping a clean sheet until the fifth minute of stoppage time. It is likely that Scott Parker will set up with a similar 4-5-1 formation at the Etihad Stadium.

You could such consider midfield alternatives, such as Salah who faces Sunderland, Leeds and West Ham before he departs for the Africa Cup of Nations around Gameweek 16, while Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) has a home fixture against Sunderland in Gameweek 7.

Midfielders have the added appeal of an extra point for a goal and the potential for a clean sheet point compared to forwards such as Haaland.

Free Hit

For managers who wish to keep Salah for the long term, bringing in Haaland to captain against Burnley while Salah faces Crystal Palace, who he blanked against in the Community Shield, looks a smart move.

There are plenty of appealing fixtures to target on a Free Hit this week.

Aside from Man City; Spurs host Wolves, Nottingham Forest are at home to Sunderland, Everton entertain West Ham and Chelsea welcome Brighton to Stamford Bridge. It is fairly straightforward to build a very strong line-up from these teams.

The downside to playing your Free Hit chip this week, as opposed to a Wildcard, is that next week your underperforming players will return to your squad, and they may have further decreased in value.

There is also a risk that the players you bring in for one week may be the same players you look to transfer in over the coming weeks.

Bench Boost

Of all the chips, the Bench Boost is probably the least appealing in Gameweek 6, although this is of course very team dependent. Martin Dubravka (£4.0m), the most-selected goalkeeper in Fantasy, travels to Man City, meaning chances of a clean sheet are slim, although save points could be in the offing.

Despite this, if you own players such as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) and Elliot Anderson (£5.5m), the Bench Boost chip looks very appealing. They have home fixtures against West Ham and Sunderland respectively.

There are potentially better times to Bench-Boost in the short term, with Burnley and Dubravka facing Leeds in Gameweek 8 and Wolves in Gameweek 9. This also strengthens the appeal of players like defender Maxime Esteve (£4.0m) and midfielder Jaidon Anthony (£5.5m).

In Gameweek 8, Sunderland host Wolves, making the likes of Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) and Omar Alderete (£4.0m) strong options. The latter has produced defensive contribution points in three of his four starts this season. In Gameweek 9, Leeds are at home to West Ham, meaning defender Joe Rodon (£4.0m) and midfielder Anton Stach (£5.0m) could be great options using the Bench Boost chip.
