Bournemouth held to goalless draw by Newcastle

Cherries are unbeaten in last four matches, while Magpies drop to 13th

AFC Bournemouth's unbeaten run stretched to four Premier League matches as the in-form Cherries played out a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United at Vitality Stadium.

Andoni Iraola's hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock on the south coast as David Brooks tapped into an unguarded net early on, but he was marginally offside from Evanilson's cross.

An end-to-end start saw both Nick Pope and Djordje Petrovic called into action, though both goalkeepers would ultimately keep clean sheets as the chances dried up.

Newcastle are the first team in Premier League history to draw their first three away matches of a season 0-0, and they sit 13th in the table with six points.

Bournemouth have 10 points from their first five matches and sit third, though Arsenal could leapfrog them when they host Manchester City in Sunday's late kick-off.

How the match unfolded

Both goalkeepers were worked within the first 11 minutes in a high-octane start. Tyler Adams' drive was blocked by the legs of Pope, before Petrovic made a similar stop to deny Jacob Murphy at the other end.

Bournemouth had the ball in the net in the 16th minute, with Brooks turning Evanilson's cutback into a gaping goal. However, referee Robert Jones disallowed that effort for offside, and a VAR review confirmed his on-field decision.

But opportunities were at a premium for the rest of the first half, before Antoine Semenyo had an effort blocked by Tino Livramento following an enterprising 53rd-minute run.

Having made sweeping changes to his starting XI, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe introduced Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes in the 62nd minute, and only a heroic challenge from James Hill prevented the latter from scoring a fine solo goal.

Neither team managed a shot on target in the second half until the first minute of stoppage time, when Pope got down to repel a Justin Kluivert free-kick and keep the match goalless.

Rare off day for Bournemouth attackers

Bournemouth came into this match on the back of three consecutive Premier League victories and knowing a fourth would lift them to second in the table, at least temporarily.

Iraola's side pressed intensely in the opening stages and looked to put Newcastle, who switched to a 3-5-2 formation, under pressure at every opportunity.

Brooks looked particularly lively, teeing up Adams' early effort with a driving run and clever backheel, before being caught offside when he converted from Evanilson's cross.

Replays showed the outside of his left boot was just fractionally beyond last man Dan Burn.

But Bournemouth's momentum waned as the first half went on, with Newcastle's back three defending their area bravely.

Ultimately, Bournemouth could have few complaints about the result, with even Semenyo – who led the Premier League for goal involvements across the first four Matchweeks – lacking his usual verve in attack.

The Cherries rarely looked troubled in defence, though, and Iraola will view this clean sheet as a major positive ahead of next Saturday's trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United.

Howe's hoodoo continues

Newcastle had no time to feel sorry for themselves after starting their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on Thursday, and Howe decided fresh legs were required.

Pope, Burn, Livramento and Sandro Tonali were the only starters to keep their places as Howe made seven changes to his team, while Anthony Gordon served the final game of his three-match domestic suspension.

Club-record signing Nick Woltemade was among those reintroduced, and though the towering German displayed some neat link-up play, the visitors struggled to provide him with service.

Woltemade did not attempt a single shot before being replaced by William Osula in the 84th minute, and a drab attacking performance maintained Howe's poor record against Bournemouth, who he left in 2020.

Howe has now failed to beat his former employers in seven Premier League meetings since taking charge at Newcastle.

He will hope the Magpies can show more attacking intent next week, as they host Bradford City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, before a Premier League match with Arsenal at St James' Park next Sunday.
