Leeds United and Sunderland matched a Premier League points record for promoted clubs on the opening weekend, with both sides claiming victories in Matchweek 1.
Sunderland were the first of the two sides to claim victory as the Black Cats sealed a dream return to the top flight with a thumping 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Leeds then beat Everton 1-0 at Elland Road on Monday to make it six points from promoted sides.
It is the first time since 2021/22, and only the third time ever, that two promoted teams have won their opening match.
It is also the first time EVER in the Premier League that two promoted clubs have won while also keeping a clean sheet on the opening weekend.
Never in the Premier League have all three sides who have come up from the second tier won on the opening weekend. The third promoted team, Burnley, fell short with their 3-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.
A record equalled
The last time three promoted clubs accrued six points from a possible nine in their Matchweek 1 encounters was in 2021/22.
On that occasion Brentford, in their first Premier League season, beat Arsenal 2-0 while Watford overcame Aston Villa 3-2. Norwich City lost 3-0 to Liverpool.
The first occasion was in 1997/98, when Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace also won.
A rare omen for the Championship winners
Leeds were the first EFL Championship champions to win their opening-weekend fixture since 2007/08 when Sunderland beat Spurs 1-0.
Furthermore, it took until 5 October for any of last season's promoted clubs to win their first match of the season when Leicester City beat AFC Bournemouth 1-0.
Hope for the promoted clubs this season?
The results bode well for the three teams to avoid an unwanted hat-trick. In the last two Premier League seasons, all three teams who achieved promotion - Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton in 2024/25; and Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United in 2023/24 - went straight back down.
Burnley will have a great chance to get off the mark in Matchweek 2, when they face Sunderland at Turf Moor on Saturday.
