Man City sign goalkeeper Donnarumma from PSG

Italy international joins Pep Guardiola's side after impressive Champions League triumph

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Italy international has signed a five-year contract and joins the club after a historic season with PSG, in which he helped the French side win a quadruple, the Ligue 1 title, French Cup, French Super Cup and UEFA Champions League.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join,” Donnarumma said in his first Man City interview.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years - so to now be able to play for the Club is a huge honour and a privilege.”

The 26-year-old becomes the third goalkeeper to join Man City this summer, following the arrivals of James Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli.

Donnarumma moves to the Etihad Stadium after Ederson, who has made 276 Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola's side, moved to Fenerbahce.

Donnarumma’s career So Far

Born in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy on 25 February 1999, Donnarumma began his football journey with Castellammare before signing for AC Milan in 2013.

He broke into Milan’s first team during the 2014/15 season, becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper ever to debut in Serie A at just 16 years and 242 days old.

The following season, he established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

In the 2020/21 campaign, he played a key role in helping Milan finish second in Serie A, securing Champions League qualification for the first time since 2012/13. That season, Donnarumma was named Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year, IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper, and won the prestigious Yashin Trophy.

On the international stage, Donnarumma was instrumental in Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 triumph. He saved Bukayo Saka’s decisive penalty in the final shoot-out against England, leading Italy to the title.

For his standout performances, he was named Player of the Tournament, becoming the first goalkeeper in history to win the award.

After six seasons with Milan's senior side, Donnarumma made the switch to PSG in 2021. During his time in Paris, he won four Ligue 1 titles, two French Cups, three French Super Cups, and one Champions League. He was also named Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Season twice.

Internationally, Donnarumma became the youngest player ever to represent Italy’s first team at age 17 years and 189 days. He has since earned 74 caps and currently serves as the national team’s captain.

Man City supporters could get their first glimpse of Donnarumma against rivals Manchester United on Sunday 14 September after the international break.
