Nine Premier League players in contention for Ballon d'Or

Four Premier League clubs have at least one player nominated for 2025 award ahead of Monday's ceremony

Nine Premier League players are in contention for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, with the winner to be announced on Monday night.

In total, four Premier League clubs have at least one player up for the award, after the 30-man shortlist was revealed last month.

Liverpool lead the way with four nominees; Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and new signing Florian Wirtz.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer is also on the shortlist, along with Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Viktor Gyokeres and Manchester City pair Gianluigi Donnarumma and Erling Haaland.

Those nominees will be seeking to become only the fourth Premier League player to win the award, after Liverpool's Michael Owen in 2001, Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd in 2008 and Rodri with Man City in 2024.

The ceremony is taking place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

How is the winner decided?

The Ballon d’Or shortlist is compiled by France Football’s editorial team, in consultation with international journalists.

Voting is carried out by one journalist from each of the top 100 FIFA nations for the men’s award, and the top 50 for the women’s award.

Each journalist ranks 10 players, awarding 15 points for first place, followed by 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point.

The winner is the player with the highest total; in the event of a tie, the players are separated by the number of first-place votes. If the tie remains, they are separated by the number of second-place votes, then by the number of third-place votes and so on.
