Newcastle sign Ramsdale on loan from Southampton

England international reunites with former boss Eddie Howe after completing move to St James' Park

Newcastle United have signed England international goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan from Southampton.

The 27-year-old is reunited with his former AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, and becomes Newcastle's fourth signing of the summer transfer window, after Antonio Cordero, Anthony Elanga and Seung-soo Park.

"Working with the manager and his coaching staff again were a big draw for me," Ramsdale said in his first Newcastle interview.

"They've already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. He really showed me the ropes so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here."

Ramsdale's career so far

Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England on 14 May 1998, Ramsdale started his career at Sheffield United before joining Bournemouth in 2017.

After loan spells with Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon between 2017 and 2019, he returned to Bournemouth, winning the supporters’ Player of the Year award in 2019/20, before rejoining Sheff Utd at the start of 2020/21 – a campaign in which he was named the club’s Player and Young Player of the Year.

A year later, Ramsdale was on the move again, this time joining Arsenal where he made 89 appearances in all competitions before joining Southampton early in the 2024/25 season.
