The Cherries reinforce their goalkeeping options following the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who returned to Stamford Bridge after a season-long loan before making a permanent move to Arsenal. No 2 goalkeeper Mark Travers also left Vitality Stadium this week to join Everton.

“I’m really happy to be here," Petrovic told the official club website. "I came to Bournemouth because I want to grow and I want to play at the best level. Together with this club, with these facilities, I think we can achieve it. I want to help the team get the results, improve every day and be a better player.”

Successful loan to Ligue 1

Petrovic, 24, spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan from Chelsea at Strasbourg, where he made 31 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets, helping the Ligue 1 side finish seventh and secure qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Of Ligue 1 goalkeepers to make at least 20 appearances last season, Petrovic kept a clean sheet in 32 per cent of his matches, with only Rennes' Brice Samba (38 per cent) keeping a higher proportion. Meanwhile, only Marcin Bulka (74.7 per cent) saved a greater share of shots on target faced than Petrovic's 74.5 per cent.

Petrovic's saves made a big difference to Strasbourg’s defensive numbers, too. Based on Opta’s Expected Goals on Target model (xGOT), Petrovic prevented 10.4 goals with his saves, conceding only 36 times from opposition shots worth 46.4 xGOT.

He was also one of the best goalkeepers with his feet in Ligue 1. He was the goalkeeper with the most touches (1,736) and successful passes (1,117) across last season. On 2 February against Rennes, he had the most touches (79) and successful passes (64) by a Ligue 1 goalkeeper on record (since 2006/07).

Petrovic’s career so far

The Serbia international began his professional career with Cukaricki, making 86 appearances before a move to Major League Soccer club New England Revolution in 2022.

His performances in the United States earned him a transfer to Chelsea in 2023. For the Blues, he made 23 Premier League appearances and kept five clean sheets before heading out on loan to France last season.

On the international stage, Petrovic made his senior debut for Serbia in 2021 and has since earned seven caps.

When could Petrovic make his Bournemouth debut?

Bournemouth are next in action against Bristol City on Saturday, before the Cherries head to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series, where they will take on Everton, Manchester United and West Ham United.

Iraola's men begin their Premier League campaign at champions Liverpool on Friday 15 August.
