Brian Little reminisces on 1975 on Villa Podcast
Brian Little reminisced on the part he played in the glorious 1974/75 season, on the latest episode of The Official Aston Villa Podcast. The former Villa player and manager joined hosts Kate Tracey and Alan McInally at Bodymoor Heath for EP14 of the popular podcast, reflecting, amongst much more, on the campaign which saw Ron Saunders' side clinch promotion to the First Division and lift the League Cup for the second time. Little broke down an incredible run from the turn of the year, which saw them win 15 of their 18 league outings between January and the end of the term, losing just once to Leyton Orient. Aston Villa Podcast Episode 14 Listen Now The 71-year-old said: "I think, if I’m right, in 74/75, we only lost one game in the second half of the season, and that was to Leyton Orient, and that was because their centre-half kicked bits out of me and Keith Leonard, and we were both terrified of him!" Elaborating further on the fear that the Orient defender struck into both he and his strike partner Leonard, Little described Tom Walley's demeanor and how he dealt with a bump to the nose, before ensuring Little spent much of the game well away from him. He continued: "I remember I spent like 15 minutes on the right wing, and I could hear Ron Saunders (saying) ‘get back in the middle’ and I’m going ‘no, no, I’m alright here’. "Their centre-half was the toughest man I’ve ever seen in my life. Big Lenny had caught him early in the game, and he’d gone down. "He rubbed his nose with the sponge. The fella with the bucket and the sponge ran on, we didn’t have physios in them days, it was a fella who ran on with a bucket and sponge. "This fella, Tom Whalley was his name, I could hear his nose crackling as he’s doing that. "Lenny’s looking at me and he’s gone (no). That’s the only game we lost in the second half of the season." An insightful episode at just under an hour long also sees Little tell the story of when he managed to dodge a haircut early in the 1970s, the day before putting pen to paper on his first professional contract with the club, instead catching the bus and going home.
