The 21-year-old Senegalese midfielder agrees a five-year deal and becomes club's second summer arrival after Le Fee

Sunderland have announced the signing of midfielder Habib Diarra from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on a five-year contract.

The 21-year-old becomes the club’s second signing of the window, following the arrival of Enzo Le Fee from Roma, as Sunderland prepare for a long-awaited return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence.

“Everyone saw last season’s success and I guarantee that I’ll give everything for this team and fight for these colours in the Premier League,” Diarra said on Sunderland's website.

Diarra's career so far

Born in Senegal, Diarra moved to France at a young age and represented them at youth level, featuring up to the Under-21s. However, he switched international allegiance to Senegal and made his senior debut last year.

Since then, he has scored four goals in 11 appearances, including a strike in Senegal's 3-1 victory over England in a friendly on 10 June.

At club level, Diarra had spent his entire professional career with Strasbourg, amassing 94 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring 10 goals and registering eight assists.

When could Diarra feature for Sunderland?

Diarra could make his first appearance in Sunderland colours during their pre-season friendly against Gateshead on 12 July.

The Black Cats will then make their Premier League return on 16 August, hosting West Ham United at the Stadium of Light.
