Van Nistelrooy waiting on future after 'special' Man Utd send-off

Interim head coach expects to hear soon if he will stay at club under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy expects to learn a decision on his future on Sunday or Monday.

Van Nistelrooy has been in charge of Man Utd for four matches, leading the club to three wins and a draw in the period between the departure of Erik ten Hag and the official start date of new head coach Ruben Amorim, who is due to begin his new role this week.

Amorim is reportedly bringing his own coaching staff with him to Man Utd, leaving Van Nistelrooy, who was assistant manager to Ten Hag, in an uncertain position.

"I appreciated the clear communication from the club that it was an interim spell for a short term," Van Nistelrooy said after Sunday's 3-0 Premier League win over Leicester City. "They kept me in the loop. It's important to have that clarity.

"In the end the most important thing is this football club, and I'm here to support it. I want to continue doing that in the future.

"The communication was that after the block of four games there will be communication between you and your colleagues who are in an uncertain situation, so I expect to hear today or tomorrow from them."

Van Nistelrooy was given a standing ovation at Old Trafford at full-time on Sunday as he walked around the pitch to applause from all four stands.

When asked if it felt like a goodbye, he said: "No, I felt like closing this period down, if you say it like that.

"The future is open. It was a moment, a beautiful moment to be able to share it with the supporters."
