Alex Keble on how the Seagulls can improve their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season

Alex Keble looks at what Brighton & Hove Albion need to do in the summer transfer window to improve their squad.

Brighton & Hove Albion

It is difficult to analyse what needs doing at Brighton before they appoint a new head coach to replace Roberto De Zerbi, but at the top end of the pitch, the situation is pretty stark.

In 2022/23 Brighton scored 72 goals and in 2023/24 they netted 55 times, a drop of 17.

They created more chances than any other team in 2022/23, with 480, but have slipped down to 429 last season, although that is mainly accounted for by Kaoru Mitoma’s injuries.

Brighton's real issue is finding a No 9. Evan Ferguson took a step backwards this season while Danny Welbeck has never been a prolific finisher, so the new Brighton head coach must prioritise a goalscoring centre-forward.

The club could also do with replacing Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, who were superb at threading balls in behind - a characteristic that Brighton lost in 2023/24.

Brighton’s number of through-balls dropped from 81 to 62, which is no surprise given their top two in this metric were Mac Allister and Caicedo, who provided 15 and 11 through-balls respectively.

Key positions to target: Central midfielder, centre-forward
