Liverpool smash xG record in win over Newcastle

Reds make Premier League history as Expected Goals numbers show they should have scored WAY more than they did

Liverpool beat Newcastle United 4-2 in one of the matches of the season at Anfield on New Year's Day, but the statistics show there could have been WAY more than the six goals that were scored.

Indeed, having had 34 shots, Liverpool accumulated an Expected Goals (xG) total of 7.27. This means based on the quality of the chances they created, they should have scored at least three goals more than they did.

Incredibly, their xG total is the highest ever produced by a team in a Premier League match, since such data became available in 2010/11.

Here we look at the top five.
