Newcastle stun PSG, Man City defeat RB Leipzig

Champions League review

Magpies beat French champions 4-1 while reigning champions City extend 100 per cent start

Newcastle celebrated their first UEFA Champions League home match in over 20 years in style as they thrashed French champions Paris Saint-Germain 4-1, while holders Manchester City made it two wins from two with a 3-1 victory at German side RB Leipzig.

The Magpies enjoyed one of the most memorable nights in the club's history as local heroes Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff, along with Miguel Almiron and Fabian Schar, scored the goals to stun PSG.

How the match unfolded

In front of a fervent crowd at St James' Park, Newcastle went in front on 17 minutes when Almiron fired in the opening goal after Alexander Isak's initial effort had been saved.

Despite PSG enjoying good spells of possession, Burn doubled Newcastle's advantage in the 39th minute, heading in at the far post from Bruno Guimaraes' cross, with the goal confirmed following a VAR review having initially been ruled out for offside.

Newcastle's dominance continued in the second half, and Longstaff added a third on 50 minutes with a low angled drive after being played in by Kieran Trippier.

Lucas Hernandez glanced in a header from close range to pull a goal back six minutes later and Ousmane Dembele missed two chances to further reduce the deficit.

Kylian Mbappe's first shot of the match came in the 85th minute, but he could only shoot wide.

Schar provided the perfect finish as he played a one-two with substitute Jacob Murphy before curling in a stunning strike in stoppage time to add a fourth for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe's side top Group F with four points, one clear of PSG in second.

Newcastle will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches when they travel to West Ham United on Sunday.

Substitutes Alvarez and Doku inspire City

Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku came off the bench to combine for two late goals as Man City made it two wins from two with a 3-1 victory at RB Leipzig.

How the match unfolded

City controlled the early proceedings in Germany and took the lead on 25 minutes through Phil Foden.

Rico Lewis played a one-two with Bernardo Silva before cutting the ball back to Foden, who produced a calm finish.

But City were caught napping three minutes into the second half as Leipzig scored from their first shot on target.

The hosts capitalised on a loose pass from Jack Grealish to launch a counter-attack that ended with Lois Openda shooting past Ederson, his strike going in off a post.

Foden hit the crossbar with a terrific free-kick while Erling Haaland missed chances to put City back in front before substitute Alvarez restored City's lead with six minutes remaining.

Teed up by Doku, the Argentinian chipped superbly into the far corner to score his sixth goal in all competitions this season.

It was roles reversed for City's third goal in stoppage time, with Alvarez laying the ball into the path of Doku, who tucked home.

City top Group G and will now turn their focus to Sunday's huge showdown against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.
