Michael Carrick
Carrick was one of the competition’s most understated midfielders.
His unobtrusive style may not have stood out for fans, but Carrick was held in the highest esteem by his team-mates and opponents.
The former Wallsend Boys Club midfielder arrived at Manchester United via West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, but it was at Old Trafford that he truly blossomed.
Carrick became the heartbeat of a Man Utd team that won five Premier League titles in seven seasons, with his calmness and authority in central midfield complemented by a superb range of passing.
