The Premier League has paid tribute to former Football League chairman Lord Brian Mawhinney, who has passed away at the age of 79.

The former MP and cabinet minister was chairman of the Football League between 2003 and 2010 and was a life member of the EFL.

Premier League Interim Chief Executive, Richard Masters, said: "I am sure that I speak for everyone at the Premier League, past and present, when I express our sadness at hearing of Lord Mawhinney's passing. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

"He became Chairman at a time of great instability for the EFL and provided strong and experienced leadership. As Chairman he achieved much and also built an excellent working relationship with the Premier League which sustains to this day. He will be greatly missed."

EFL Chair Rick Parry told the EFL's official website: "Everyone associated with the EFL is saddened to hear of the loss of Lord Mawhinney, a hugely respected and influential figure in our recent past, most notably for his work as Chairman of the Football League but also for the significant impact he had on the wider game.
